With Farage at 25-35% I don't see that consensus in UK society before 2030
bsky.app/profile/aphc...
If the UK is to become a full member of the EU again then British leaders and voters need to be aware that the pre-2016 deal is probably not going to be on the table anymore.

Stable membership would then require a sustainable consensus within UK society for the full spectrum of European integration

At this rate US politics will end up becoming a proxy war between the EU and Russia

There is a lot of discussion about blindspots in European foreign policy debate.

You can make a strong claim from a Canadian, Caricom, Mexican or Brazilian perspective that one of Europe's biggest blindspots is every part of the Western Hemisphere outside the United States.

It's why "woe is VW/BMW/Siemens/Bosch" etc pieces about the problems with German industry are misleading. The big German firms long ago became EU-wide corporations. They'll adapt and do fine.

It's much of the traditional vast network of German supply firms that is screwed.
bsky.app/profile/aphc...
There are many dynamics to Germany's industrial woes, but one of the most important is how big German manufacturing corporations ascended to become truly Europe-wide operations at the expense of their traditional German suppliers, who are often no longer competitive with rivals in other EU states

Watching morning news shows in the UK, France and Germany it is remarkable how in ignoring the issue they seem oblivious to how screw ups around potential imminent US strikes on Venezuela have risks for the global order as bad as those from Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The amount of wordcount some colleagues expend in trying to project strategic rationality into Trump's incompetent flailing is absurd
bsky.app/profile/aphc...
At least we now know which American IR scholars and foreign policy commentators to cold call the next time anyone needs to sell some Trump steaks
November 23, 2025 at 3:38 PM
If there is ever a datapoint for how no one ever learns anything ever it is in how after Trump's strategic fuck ups with the US-Russia meetings in Riyadh and Anchorage you still see people wasting 1000s of Substack wordcount on another American strategic brainfart

IMV the final twin failures of Corbynism and McSweeneyism is a blessing for the UK Left in opening up more space for its more serious policy wonks to re-engage with people from other ideological currents with less of the factional grinding of axes

If Mahmood and Starmer think putting Labour in a position where migration policy hinges on conflict management and post-conflict stabilisation in the Sahel or Syria will save the UK government money then they are trapped in a borderline delusional echo chamber.
November 15, 2025 at 3:34 PM
Has Mahmood even consulted with the FCDO about any of this?
bsky.app/profile/aphc...
At the very least the Starmer government needs to be honest with itself and voters that any asylum and refugee policy that hinges on the ability to declare post-conflict states as safe will need an increase in EU/UK development and military aid to those states.

Taps sign, again
bsky.app/profile/aphc...
As a geopolitical sidenote, it makes UK migration policy even more dependent on the stability of at least a dozen conflict and post-conflict states.

That increases the leverage of the Sharaa government in Syria and similar actors when asking for military and financial assistance from London
This is the Home Secretary's video about "why"

A government which had the principle of *defusing* the salience by getting a grip with control, while maintaining compassion, would not use the rhetorical devices here to stoke up the salience of the issue they hope to defuse

Which then arcs back to the problem of how a UK government might enable refugee returns

I think that is open to debate. It can always get worse. The Epstein files need to be released to push back against a horrifically corrupt elite network. But that will not be the end of the fight

It's also worth noting that leaking to UK journalists that UK-EU talks are in a bad state is a classic Brussels move to ratchet up pressure on states that need a deal more with the EU than the EU does with them
The EU makes many mistakes and should show far more flexibility towards North and West African states in trading relations.

That is a separate matter from a UK government that talks a Europe-friendly game yet still manages to burn goodwill with partners in the EU over minor sums

Worst case scenario is a radicalised Trump team mainlining crackpot memes from social media decides it must crush Congress and encourages armed state and non-state supporters to attack it.

How that ends depends on whether they can mobilise 0.5%, 5% or 15% of the population.
bsky.app/profile/aphc...
I reckon Trump's people will mess with mid-term elections, but so ineptly that they screw it up and if things continue to drift even angrier Dems control Congress by 2026.

Best case scenario then is polarised paralysis where his damage is initially contained and then fixed over 4-6 years after 2028

The Tomahawks were never going to Kyiv. Moscow will not get its new Yalta.

A Budapest summit will end as another loud diplomatic farting noise that doesn't help Zelensky, Orban or Putin.

A lot of people need to get used to how useless America will be in a post-American world
October 19, 2025 at 6:32 PM
A year into this and it is still remarkable to see how much analysis of America's ability to influence the trajectory of key flashpoints in the global system simply skip over how far growing domestic instability inside the US will affect America's ability to project power
October 19, 2025 at 6:32 PM
There is escalation between Washington and blue states like Illinois and California as Trump-backed paramilitaries enter into daily confrontations with people in major American cities and the US government enters a 4th week of shutdown.

Yet people still discuss US global power as if it is 1987.
