Good morning to those who pressed enter on my bootloader this morning.

Warning to all Samsung tab users that might see this, OneUi 8 entirely removes classic dex, and just gives you a very terrible dex that is just the normal android ui plus windows.
It also gets rid of unlocking bootloader, can't root or change os at a later date, just do not update.

thats how i feel when i see shit like "the iphone must let you delete safari" and not "the iphone must have an open bootloader"

mais uma vez o bootloader fez assim. ainda bem que é só rodar o mkinitcpio e grub-install.

Quick update on this: I'm getting a KVM console connected so I can finish the upgrade and then I'll reboot once I regain access via SSH. Not immediately rebooting because I am not sure if the upgrade left the bootloader configured properly, so I'm not sure the server would survive a reboot

man i neeeeed a better research android device, the only remotely modern android phone in the house is a pixel 4a with a fucked battery and waydroid has decided i'm not allowed to use it anymore

requirements
- can run the latest version of android
- rootable (so, bootloader unlockable)
that's it

The bootloader is unlockable which is a huge plus for anyone interested in trying to push the performance of the device or fix any nitpicks.

Two separate drives, one for Linux, the other for windows. If you keep windows on the same drive as Linux, Windows updates will sometimes destroy your Linux bootloader

dealing with the ups and downs of using linux.

on the plus side, it seems I must've had an issue with the windows bootloader for the last few years (the pc occasionally not posting, but I couldn't replicate it) which is gone now that I'm using grub. downside: now having to deal with hdcp issues.

Today in "why did I decide to be a fw eng?":

Had tree producing images that brought up bootloader but kernel crashed after.

Built on another machine, was fine.

Turns out, month ago on the original machine, I'd symlinked py3 -> py2 because old u-boot wanted py2. Built silently but fucked up.

got this recently for $20

its a google tv device

it doesnt require a verizon account to use

its bootloader unlocked and you can just boot stuff off of usb

the hardware is very similar (possibly the same) as far as i can tell to the xo6 pro x4

it runs android 10 has 8gb of internal flash

Turns out a windows 11 update is what bricked my bootloader. Had to bring it into a shop to get it fixed. As always, fuck windows. Might be worth seriously investigating: omarchy.org

LineageOS is the best go-to option imo, especially if you intend to keep using google apps. keep in mind unlocking the bootloader may prevent you from using banking apps wiki.lineageos.org/devices/

After being confused why I couldn't get one half of a ZMK keyboard to reset into its bootloader for many hours I finally thought to ask Claude Code which suggested it might be a power-only USB C cable issue, and solved my problem in under a minute

except for that one spot where the bootloader manages to full volume beep because it sent a low level command to sys.io.buzzer that still exists for compatibility with ibm hmmvw ecu experiments from 1986
