Colourful Glassworts seen with Liverpool Botanical Society at Hightown. S. europaea group appear beaded and central flower much larger. S. Procumbens group have more cylindrical segments and lateral flowers similar in size to central #wildflowerhour

Four rather special plants recorded from upper saltmarsh at Gibraltar Point NNR last Sunday - One-flowered Glasswort (my first encounter with this scarce species), Sea-heath, a rock sea-lavender Limonium intercedens and Shrubby Seablite.

Not a lot of photos due to heavy rain coming in soon after I got to Lodmoor. But I did get a few shots of this Little egret, looking lovely against the reddening glasswort. I had to laugh when it caught a large fish, as it scurried quickly into the reeds before another bird could take it. #UKBirding

A Snowy Egret, smaller than the Great, same white colouring but with a black bill and yellow from bill to eye. Yellow feet, not visible in this shot, but a yellow line up the leg is visible. Twite are specialist foragers on glasswort (Salicornia) seeds - expanding area at Seaton Snook but none at S Gare. Twite flocks do appear at S Gare but depends if tidal surges preceding winter have dumped enough kelp - rotting seaweed favours nitrogen-hungry annual plants whose seeds they also eat.

Center frame, a Black-necked Stilt sits on a nest, close to the water. From Allaboutbirds.org., Black-necked Stilts nest on the ground. They tend to build on surfaces above water, such as small islands, clumps of vegetation, or even, occasionally, floating mats of algae. Both female and male choose the site; they look for places with soft sand or other substrate that can be scraped away to form the nesting depression. The nests are often set among vegetation stubble adjacent to water or on dikes, islands, or high spots with sparse vegetation such as glasswort and saltgrass.

Center frame, black-necked stilt stood guard over the area their mate was nesting, to ensure nothing comes to disturb them. I was yelled at several times and I was at least 10 yards away on a boardwalk, looking down at them.

Current project:
Using the broad fork on this bed that will hold sea kale (Crambe maritima) and another Rhubarb.
I'll set some of the soil aside, and drop in a layer of goat bedding and amendments.

The salt marsh ecosystem at Kilchoan is rich, vibrant and verdant. Changing with every tide it’s a home to many species of birds and wildlife.

The geology around the salt marsh is of special interest too.

Kilchoan, Scotland has salt marshes that support a variety of plants and animals, including:
Plants: Sea aster, scurvy-grass, glasswort, salt marsh grass, annual sea blight, turf fucoids, and sea pinks
Animals: Waders, wintering and passage birds, raptors, otters, and more
Rare species: Saltmarsh sedge, spoonbill, glossy ibis, and black-winged stilt

Salt marshes in Lochaber are known for their freshwater seepage communities and transitions to terrestrial habitats. The area is also home to a diverse range of wildlife, including red squirrel, pine marten, wild cat, red deer, badger, golden eagle, raven, ptarmigan, corncrake, hen harrier, and peregrine falcon.
When visiting a salt marsh, it's recommended to wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and gloves. The black needlerush or Juncus that grows on the high marsh has sharp tips that can prick your skin or injure your eyes.

Fragments of salt marsh can be found in Kilchoan, Glenborrodale, Salen and Kentra Bay, as well as sheltered bays around Loch Moidart. These saltmarshes support a range of saltmarsh specialists, including sea aster (Aster tripolium), scurvy-grass (Cochlearia officinalis), glasswort (Salicornia spp), salt marsh grass (Puccinellia maritima), annual sea blight (Suaeda maritima) and turf fucoids, as well as blankets of sea pinks (Armeria maritima), resplendent in June. Rarities include the saltmarsh sedge, Carex salina. The saltmarshes in Lochaber are renowned for their 'freshwater seepage communities' and 'undisturbed transitions' to terrestrial habitats such as bog, fen, heath and woodland. Saltmarshes are a good place to look for waders and wintering and passage birds, as well as raptors.

Saltmarsh is a type of vegetation dominated by higher plants that is regularly inundated by salt water.

Seen from above, saltmarshes are wonderful mosaics of land and water, with sinuous creeks and isolated pans (pools) among the green swards. An underground drainage network may connect the pans – you may even spot one of the ‘pipes’ in a dry pan.

Most saltmarsh vegetation is intertidal. But in some exposed situations – even on cliff tops high above the tidal limit – there may be so much sea spray that the vegetation is identical to that of a saltmarsh.

Saltmarshes tend to develop in quiet conditions where the sea deposits fine sediments. Some may have been created when coarser terrestrial sediments were drowned. We also know that some saltmarshes in the Western Isles were once machair.

Saltmarsh may occur:

in bays in firths or in estuaries
at the head of sea lochs
on the landward side of spits and islands
Saltmarsh occurs on most Scottish coasts – with by far the largest areas in the Solway Firth. Scotland has 7,076 hectares of saltmarsh, 77.4% of which lie within Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

How Scottish saltmarshes differ

The vegetation differs greatly (in general terms) between Scottish and English saltmarshes. Many of the familiar English species are found only in the south-west of Scotland or are absent altogether.

In Scotland, the lower ‘pioneer’ saltmarsh that grades into mudflats is scarcer, and many Scottish systems have an abrupt seaward margin that gives way directly to mudflats.

Scottish saltmarshes contain a range of northern species such as:

saltmarsh flat-sedge (Blysmus rufus)
slender spike-rush (Eleocharis uniglumis)
the rare Eleocharis parvula – discovered in the Cromarty Firth in 1999
Fucus cottonnii, a tiny seaweed – this is contained in a short, closely grazed turf that’s typical of saltmarshes in the north-west
