You have to have a groundwater pathway accessible to the surface under pressure to have artesian flow. If it was going to happen in the San Juan basin, it probably already would have. Not saying it can’t and won’t, but if it was 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks to the Capricorn Caves team for another amazing research visit.
We downloaded cave hydrology loggers and a groundwater level logger, and ACKMA cave climate loggers. Visited the groundwater recharge zone above the cave. Saw lots of bats, and tree roots deep into the cave system.

The truth of the matter is that unless you’re drinking distilled water or are drinking water that could likely be used to do cleanroom work at Intel or SEH, your drinking water does contain trace amounts of material from its source, be it groundwater or surface water

NOAA has an updated water cycle diagram? I like that they keep it simple.

But that groundwater diagram will perpetuate common misunderstandings. And it fails to show that groundwater/surface-water exchange goes both ways, particularly important with climate change. ⚒️

Oases form where groundwater reaches the surface, creating "islands" of other lifeforms bounded by desert. They're critical refuges for some migratory species. I'd love to see one/be in one, one day—have you?

Hydrology Paper of the Day @andy-baker.bsky.social on how surface fire affects groundwater recharge due to rainfall in a karst cave situated in New South Wales, Australia: drip loggers utilized to quantify recharge and a model of how fractures, ash, vegetation and soil affects water inputs.
New paper alert led by Christina Song & Micha Campbell

Working at Wombeyan Caves, we identified potential recharge events by logging cave drip water in a shallow cave

During our monitoring, an intense fire occurred above the cave. Find out what happened here...

If you cut down an active ikaite column, the pipeline of groundwater will forcefully continue rising toward the surface, and begin to rebuild ikaite immediately.
It makes pretty opal!

Hobby farms (aka a few "boutique" cattle) are the absolute wooooorst for surface and groundwater contamination because they often don't do anything to deal with their manure. ... because they don't have to, by law.

I wanted to start off with one of my favorites and something that applies to everyone. Impervious surfaces: These are any surface that water will run off of instead of being able to go through. This can include houses, sidewalks, roads, and even most house yards. This causes loss in groundwater.

Water Contamination with Pesticides Goes Unmonitored as Problem Escalates - Beyond Pesticides Daily News Blog
(Beyond Pesticides, October 7, 2021) The Arizona State Auditor General reports a lack of groundwater monitoring for pesticides and other contaminants by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). For over six years, the agency failed to monitor groundwater and soil for agricultural pesticide contamination. Furthermore, the agency did not implement key groundwater monitoring processes over four years, despite law requirements. This lack of waterway monitoring resulted in an increased number of impaired surface waters across the state.   Pesticide contamination in waterways is historically commonplace and widespread throughout U.S. rivers and streams, with at least five or more different pesticides present in 90 percent of water samples. Thousands of tons of pesticides enter waterways (e.g., rivers, streams, lakes, oceans) around the U.S. from agricultural and nonagricultural sources, contaminating essential drinking water sources, such as surface water and groundwater. Reports like these are essential in determining appropriate regulatory action to protect human, animal, and environmental health from chemical toxicant contamination. The report states, “[The] Department has not developed all required aquifer water quality standards, conducted key ongoing groundwater monitoring of the State’s aquifers, monitored for agricultural pesticides in groundwater and surrounding soil, or reduced the number of impaired surface waters in the State, limiting its […]
