Hark! There's a planet! A rat-like thing lives there and gulps lilac popsicles. We could voyage there via hyperdrive. Do you want to murmur there?

I have discovered a planet. We could voyage there via hyperdrive. Eventually, a sloth could find a home there.

Says the person who's not paying attention?

Qui-Gon: "You will exchange my Republic credits for Tatooine currency."

Guy: "I will exchange your Republic credits for Tatooine currency."

Qui-Gon: "Here you go Watto."

Watto: "Here's your hyperdrive."

Qui-Gon: *leaves*

And, you know, 'needs of the many'. The people of Naboo are allegedly starving under the occupation of the Trade Federation.

And once again, he could have just either stolen the hyperdrive from Watto or stolen the credits he needed to buy the hyperdrive. He didn't even need to hire a ship.

Like, you actually just managed to hurt your own arguments, especially by pointing out how Qui-Gon could have just stolen the hyperdrive he wanted.

Getting Padme to Coruscant is more important than anything else, so the fact that he doesn't even entertain other options is bad.

literally just said. He brings a nine year old child into a dangerous war zone and he never explores other options of getting Padme off-world like hiring transport or just stealing the parts he needs, especially when he was already willing to scam Watto for the hyperdrive.

I dunno... it's not clear from the wiki post, but the issue which sank the "superior" fleet was development of a hyperdrive, enabling them to blink in & out of the battle venue - except that the transition warped components, so none of their spare parts fitted as every one had to be hand finished...

I think one of the big things is that none of these plays have the intent on dying. The original context for zyf’s post was a critique on hyperdrive as it was being talked about a ton. All of those plays you mention make sense and are sound in logic if not a bit risky but the goal is to do it

Sadly true. Many people are lucky enough to have family to care for them, or the means to care for themselves. But many is far from all. And, of course, the only purpose of health "care" in the U.S. is to extract as much money from people as possible, which goes into hyperdrive with the elderly.

My theory is that it’s simply a galaxy so compact that there’s (perhaps barely) breathable atmosphere everywhere. In EpV, the Falcon loses hyperdrive but can still limp to Bespin at sub-light speed in something far less than a human lifetime. How far is any star from any other?

If I’m Qui-Gon Jinn, when my mind trick doesn’t work on Watto, I’d go to someone else and mind trick them into exchanging my credits with the local currency, then go back to Watto and buy the hyperdrive generator to get the hell off of Tatooine instead of playing games with a 9-year-old’s life.

And I say we cut out the Canto Bight sequence and have Finn and Rose be in charge of fixing the hyperdrive each time it breaks down, with DJ as a cynical fellow technician.

Make Crait a Verpine world (they built the B-wing and the salt speeders, have DJ be a traitor who sabotages shields

Yeah, I'm trying to solve it, but I got nothing. Closest I can get is contriving some damage to the main ship's hyperdrive which limits their range and forces them to fix it before jumping again.

Each jump, all the ships have to pause and and Holdo uses that time to try and consolidate.

Finally, a chance to indulge my main SF rant: every show or book or movie with space travel beyond the solar system has to magic away the laws of physics. Warp drive, hyperdrive, FTL drive, even “hypersleep,” it’s all just a way to ignore relativity so they can get on with the story.
