We have our own little racism stew here, but not the mortgage one. The area that I live in is about 1/3 Maori, 1/3 Pasifika, 1/3 white and other. Mortgages are fine. And yeah insurance is a bit more driven by earthquakes, and tsunami risk. Definitely shows up in other things though

Due to significant social inequalities between Maori and Pasifika peoples and the rest of the population, respiratory health is a lot poorer in those demographics, resulting in vaping having a far greater negative impact than elsewhere. 2/

Unemployment is particularly acute for young people – with 15,500 more 15-24 year olds unemployed than at the election. Māori unemployment is 10.5%, Pasifika is 12.1%. A record 406,000 people are underutilised – meaning that they want more work or access to work but can’t get it

We are far past close our eyes and hope it isn't as bad as it might be.

Her own advice says Māori and Pasifika kids will be harmed. She doesn't care.

Education academics and leaders say her curriculum will harm kids, especially the vulnerable. She doesn't care.

I'm not sure about other Pasifika countries (although I'd suspect their armory was the same) but spears & shields were not part of the Aotearoa Māori tradition

Māori Weapons (Patu, Taiaha etc)
Most of the time, a Māori warrior would take two weapons into battle, a short, striking one and a long weapon, which allowed him to stand further away from his enemy.

Stole the land from Maori then stole and crushed land from Pasifika to fertilise it.
NZ pakeha prosperity is only because of original theft.

Yep, always get nice headshot photos of artists against a neutral background. We desperately need usable pics of NZ artists, especially Māori and Pasifika.

Bangerz "says its goal is to help youth, especially Pasifika and Māori, with learning and training."

Because public school have been doing that for way too long, apparently?

Brooke Van Velden appoints three Pākehā men to board of #WorkSafeNZ to join the one woman and the other Pākehā man. No Māori or Pasifika people on the board AFAIK.

Just as well only Pākehā risk accidents at work.

As a white New Zealander I am often thankful for the civilising influence of Māori and Pasifika culture, and this was one of those times because I saw one post like "Mamdani falsely claimed someone was his aunt" and I knew EXACTLY how bullshit the story was going to be
This anthropology factoid brought to you by that dumb story about the next mayor of NYC who told a story about his "auntie", a woman who was his father's cousin, and then people saying he lied because his father's cousin isn't his aunt. English has an impoverished view of kinship terminology.

As far as I can see, one mention of Māori or Pasifika at Year 9, and that is in ecology. No mention of stars - we currently do Matariki at Year 9 and tie the changing night skies to seasons, also talk about star formation. Gone.

Measles is entirely preventable. This isn’t about individual choice, it’s about public health infrastructure, trust, & equity.

Policy failure costs them.

Yep there are changes all over the place, without proper consultation and poorly thought through. No need to teach Māori or Pasifika authors in English at Senior high school but 19th century English writers, and Shakespeare would be compulsory.

‘Māori women and Pasifika people are effectively working for free for the rest of the year because of persistent gender and ethnic pay gaps, with all women working for free from the 30th of November—that’s a national shame.’
