There are little murmurs from the other guests as Ed and Stede walk around and interact with the displays, immersing themselves in underwater worlds. Near a back corner, two humpback whales, a mother with her calf, swim closely beneath the water’s surface. The calf stays hovering above the mother as she guides the way, sunlight from above glimmering on their skin. All of a sudden, rumbling coos fill the space, playing along with the calming ocean music.

“Incredible, aren’t they?” Stede murmurs beside Ed. “My only regret is that I’ll never get to hear a whale song.”

Ed’s eyes remain glued to the screen, and he holds himself tighter. “You’ve never heard it on a cruise before?”

“No, sadly. It’s nearly impossible to hear them. It’s amazing, actually. Whale songs can be transmitted four times faster than in the air, but the water’s barrier prevents them from being heard above the surface.” Stede sighs deeply to himself, filled with tender melancholy. “I guess it’s better that way. Some things are too beautiful to be meant for us.”

Ed swallows deeply as he considers this, but while he’s distracted, he fails to notice the calf swimming off by itself. The projection focuses on the calf, and suddenly, the whale song seems much louder and sharper, almost like the baby whale is crying… lost and alone… searching for its mother in the great, deep blue.

Getting to the trailhead was easier than Ed imagined it would be. Somehow he assumed it would come with questioning strangers and interruptions and something stopping him entirely. A missed bus. A closed road. A car crash.
The universe seems wholly uninterested in one Ed Teach, however, and he finds himself standing at the weather-worn trailhead sign, images depicting safety hazards one would expect to encounter. Sharp drops. Loose rocks. Bears. The uzhe.
It’s a rarely-used trail, purposefully selected for exactly that reason. Not trying to ruin some family’s Sunday outing.
It heads due east, distinctly away from the enormous lake he visited twice as a kid. Doesn’t want memories of his mother clouding his judgment now. Plus, it’s not like the water holds an escape for him anymore anyway. Playing pirates, dreaming of a life of intrigue on the high seas? That was fun at 8. Leave it where it lies, Teach.
He’s slammed with a memory of a dream with Stede. Of racing leaf boats down their [rainbow] stream, chasing along the bank as the boats dipped and swirled in the currents, taking on water and tipping precariously over rushing waterfalls. Of waking up the next morning and naming those boats, drawing pictures and imagining backstories of pirate explorers, conquering ocean waves and terrible storms at Stede’s side. The world had felt so big then. The possibilities had felt so tangible. He felt like he could have reached out and grabbed Stede by the hand, pulled him right out of that world and into…what? Your world? Hardly.
Even then, Ed knew Stede didn’t belong in his world. Ed’s world was harsh and angry. Stede deserved softness and color. Stede was safer left waiting in Ed’s subconscious, ready when Ed needed gentle joy on another night.
But the possibilities could have been real, his inner voice helpfully supplies.
“Fuck that,” Ed tells whatever tree creatures might be listening.

Wee John offers the beanie, and Ed generously takes it. Its wool is of royal purple, and it has a big puffy pom-pom sewn on the top. While Ed fiddles with it, he pinches the wool between his fingertips, and it's so silky and smooth that he puts on the beanie without thinking twice about it.

"Oh yes, that suits ya indeed!" Wee John praises even before Ed's done tugging on the beanie.

Jim and Archie seem to approve, too. They nod once, good. Then two nods, very good. And then they smile, showing no signs of a catastrophic pursing of the lips. Who knew that a beanie in winter could be so groundbreaking? (Yes, Ed has watched The Devil Wears Prada. More than once.
Because he can. That's all.)

"You do look good," Lucius soon agrees before tilting his head with a growing smirk. "Okay, you look hot. And cute. It'll be perfect."

Ed finishes pulling on the beanie, and though his head warms with instant relief, he feels his cheeks burn hotter. "What will be perfect?"

"Oh, Ed..."

And with that soft gasp, Ed's completely thawed. He very slowly turns around, like he's afraid he'll burst into flames, and finds Stede standing before him with Mary, Doug and the kids by his side, and his eyes swelling like sunbursts.

"Ed," Stede breathes, his smile growing brighter like a rainbow after a long storm. "Look at how radiant you are."

Stede, going through it...

“Stede?”
He’s wild-eyed, debating how much he should share, how actually insane she might take him for. Because it’s one thing, right, to mention having had a recurring dream from childhood recur. It’s entirely another thing for said person from that dream to be real. (It’s probably also another entire thing for visions to happen in the middle of making an orange juice selection, but one thing at a time.)
The world shimmers around him again, much like it did in the shop, the room around him blurring for a moment into wilderness, trees and mountains and an oddly familiar old bench appearing where there usually are none of these – and there he is again, standing right on the edge of one such mountain.
“Ed!” Stede reaches out, afraid but determined, before everything resets.
“Stede!” Mary repeats herself, more forcefully this time, and it blinks Stede back to the present. “What on earth is going on?”
“I– I honestly don’t know, Mary.” He turns toward the patio door, quick-steps in the direction of sunshine. Maybe he just needs to sit outside in some fresh air. Maybe he’s spent too many days pent up in his bedroom, burning his eyes with blue light and doomscrolls. What is it the internet calls it? Touching grass? Yes, that must be it. He needs to touch some grass. Maybe even literally.

Bahaha ok. I knew this was the answer really. Have a teeny tiny #OFMDBB25 snip first.

But anyway, yeah, it's Lucius' birthday bash tonight and Ed had even agreed to dress up for it - any excuse to impress Stede. He's got Ivan and Archie in, working the bar so he's got more time to spend with Stede too.
Ed smoothes the lines of his pleated skirt and checks the knot he tied in his shirt. He straightens
his pigtails and grabs the pack of Tutti Frutti Hubba Bubba he'd bought specially before heading downstairs.
He wonders if Stede's already here. If he's about
to make his grand entrance and leave Stede speechless. Kinda hopes so. Starts working a piece of his bubblegum just in case.

All right. If Stede's gonna throw the door that wide open, can Ed be blamed for walking right through?
"Maybe they have," he replies in his sexiest
baritone, cocking an eyebrow and leaning closer, resting his hand on the back of Stede's chair.
"Maybe you just didn't realize it." If Ed were speaking to anybody but Stede, whose self-esteem is so full of holes he may as well be Swiss cheese, he'd be certain he was laying it on far too thick. Ed knows he's being blatant as fuck. Ridiculously so.

Let’s do a little #WIPWednesday for my #OFMDBB25 in which Ed is a menace.

“Thought you looked like a tea guy,” Ed explains. “But we can swap if you want. Or I can go back, get something else.”
“No, tea's lovely thank you,” Stede rushes to reassure him, his teeth aching a little bit just looking at Ed’s choice. “What’ve you got there?” he asks.
“‘S a chocolate fudge frappé, extra caramel syrup,” Ed says with a sort of self-deprecating chuckle. “Got a bit of a wicked sweet tooth.”
“I can see that,” Stede chuckles back.
“Wanna try?” Ed asks, though he pulls the glass towards himself. Settles his own plush lips around the straw and Stede really tries (really does) not to stare. “Mmm,” Ed hums, “‘s good.” He tips the glass towards Stede in offering and… oh… that’s… he can’t. Not when Ed’s just… Can he? He doesn’t even like…
“Go on then,” Stede’s mouth says, completely independent of his brain. He takes a sip, resolutely not thinking about the fact that Ed’s lips were just where his are now, the paper straw still a little damp from them, and schoolyard rules would say that’s tantamount to kissing. “Very nice,” he manages, not having really tasted the chocolatey concoction at all.

“You think that’s good, you should try a bit of this,” Ed says, scooping up a mouthful of the chocolate cake onto his fork and holding it out to Stede. Not so Stede can take the fork himself, no. Ed’s holding it in such a way that it’s clear his intention is for Stede to lean in and allow Ed to deposit the morsel directly into his mouth. He can feel the heat rising up his throat and flushing his cheeks just at the idea of it. But he can also see the mischievous glint in Ed’s eye and the smirk he’s trying to suppress and Stede is not about to back down from the challenge, nor let Ed win this interaction.
So he leans in. Allows Ed to place the cake on his waiting tongue, even if it feels as though his face is positively on fire and he’s hyper aware of all the people around them in the cafe as he does. He closes his lips around it as Ed removes the fork.
Ed, for his part, has not taken his eyes off Stede. His gaze hovering somewhere around his lips now as he lifts the fork almost absentmindedly to his own mouth. As he licks the last of the sticky chocolate residue from the tines.
Gosh, Stede’s not sure he’s going to survive this. Whatever this is.

I wrote about 3k tonight and am still not close to finishing my #OFMDBB25, so please like this post to get me motivated and enjoy this snippet that features something spicy and something sweet. 🐳❤️ #WIPWednesday

“It may look like it’s waving at us, but that’s known as pec slapping,” Stede informs the giggling crowd. “Southern rights have more rounded flippers than humpbacks, though they both love to pec slap. A whale may pec slap to communicate with other whales, or they’re simply playing around!”

As the crowd watches on, waiting for the southern right to appear again, Ed’s eyes trail down to Stede’s blue humpback shirt, his buttons still straining at his chest, and I’d like to slap those pecs–

“Get a grip!”

“What was that?”

Ed’s eyes fly up, and Stede is staring at him with his brows raised peculiarly.

“Nothing,” he spits out, but Stede’s brows remain raised, unconvinced. “Um,” Ed panics, and though Stede’s eyes are up there, he finds himself staring at his chest again. “I like that shirt.”

“Oh, this new thing?” Stede glances at his shirt and chuckles modestly. “I had a whole suit planned, but Olu’s partner said it was cursed. Probably because I told them they could only look at it.” Stede tuts under his breath and smirks, and Ed withholds a snigger at his bitchiness. “Long story, but I kept the shirt.”

Ed raises a brow. “That wasn’t a long story at all.”

“Well, I…” Stede stammers, blushing and looking away.

“But you wear that shirt well.”

Another Big Bang WIP for #WIPWednesday, and Ed is having the worst time of his life listening to an oblivious Stede making dolphin innuendos. 🐬💦 #OFMDBB25

“Look at these beautiful darlings,” Stede croons through the speakers, causing Ed to gulp at the use of the term, darling. “Bottlenose dolphins are incredible swimmers. They move quite fast at 30 kilometres an hour, and they can leap up to five metres in the air and dive as deep as 250 metres below the surface. But they can only hold their breath for seven minutes at a time! That’s why they regularly come up for air. If you look closely, you might spot the hole in the top of their heads. This is what they use to breathe through: a blowhole.”

In the frosty ocean air, Ed suddenly finds himself sweating, and he tightens his grip on the railing, his knuckles flushing pale white.
“When they surface,” Stede prattles on, “bottlenose dolphins open up their blowholes to take in some much-needed air.”

Fucking hell. Ed clenches his jaw and groans in his chest, dying for some much-needed air himself.

“After they breathe in through their blowholes,” fuck fuck fuck fuck, “bottlenose dolphins close them up again so they can dive deep underwater. But how clever are these creatures to have mastered complete control over their blowholes?”

NOPE.

Another tease of my #OFMDBB25 for #WIPWednesday, and Ed’s having some thoughts about this bizarre little man he’s seeing for the first time…🐳💙

Oh, fuck.

A sunny-haired man steps up onto the jetty and beams at the crowd, spreading out his arms, his arms, his fucking arms, which are covered by a black thermal top that's tight enough to reveal the lines of his biceps. But those delicious-strong-arms are not the only revealing feature. The top has a few buttons undone, and if Ed squints his eyes, he can make out a few long, delicate golden hairs bouncing out in the early morning light. They dust over the dents of his collarbone, and are tangled in the silver chain and shark tooth necklaces resting around his thick, sturdy neck. There's enough presented to make Ed picture the shape of the man's chest, the size of his pecs, and the faint curves of his stomach. But whatever it looks like has to stay in a sealed envelope in his mind, for the man also wears the most ridiculous and gorgeous shirt Ed has ever seen.

It's a short-sleeve, button-up shirt that's as blue as the deepest midnight, with white, star-like dots that flow like waves, and come together across the torso to form something resembling a humpback whale.
And it's so outrageous and daring that it makes Ed's eyes water, not because it hurts, but because he is unable to blink and miss a second of this man's, of Stede's, spellbinding aura that feels like heatwaves in the winter frost.

It's #WIPWednesday and I'm finally going to start sharing some snips from my #OFMDBB25
Two treats today! The summary and the opening.

Summary:
Stede’s been bringing his queer book club to Ed’s bar for a couple of months now, and Ed’s been nursing a bit of a crush (okay a lot of a crush) basically since the moment he walked in. He doesn’t intend to act on it, doesn’t really think Stede would be interested in him anyway, but then he overhears them talking about their most recent book - a smutty romance that Lucius picked. Stede didn’t enjoy it, doesn’t think relationships like that exist in the real world. That all-consuming, ‘can’t keep your hands off each other’, desperate wanting. And, well, he can’t have that. Stede might just be the guy of his dreams, so if nothing else Ed knows he can show Stede what it feels like to be wanted.

Tuesday nights are always quiet, but tonight is the first Tuesday of the month, which means it’s Book Club night. Ed watches as the fascinating bunch of weirdos start to arrive; some head straight to their usual table in the corner to dump their bags and shit, others come to the bar first, asking Ed for their drinks of choice.
Ed’s learnt a couple of their names these past three months, even paired them up with their regular orders in his head. There’s Lucius, with his Cosmopolitan, and his boyfriend Pete who prefers a lager. Frenchie often has a pint of something bitter, whilst Olu usually opts for tea.
The others are just starting to get settled when Stede arrives, comes bounding in with a “hi all”, little jazz hands and everything. The last of the day’s sunshine is radiating off him like it just can’t bear to let him go. Ed gets it. Can barely take his eyes off him as he circulates, greeting the rest of his bookish oddballs. Ed’s subtle about it, obviously. Doesn’t just stand there gawping, he’s busy pouring drinks and stuff.

For #WIPWednesday here is snippet from my Big Bang! It is a canon-divergent magical realism fic where Stede makes a deal with a dodgy magician to get back to Ed, only to find that whilst he is back on the Revenge, something is very wrong...

"Hey!" Stede yells, but both shush him again. "I will not!" he replies. "Take me to Ed right now!"

"Hey, hey, easy," Jim soothes, but before Stede can continue, he feels fingers scratch his scalp once more.

Still murmuring calming words, Jim continues to scratch behind his ears, under his chin, and then stroke his back with firm pressure.

"Sshh, easy, perrito," Jim says softly. About as softly as Stede has ever heard them.

"Um, not that I don't love a massage..." he tries, but then Jim scratches at his belly and... Oh. He's in heaven. Usually he hates this much touching, but this? This he likes. So much so, he collapses to the floor and rolls onto his back in sheer bliss. Is it Jim? Have they been a master masseuse this whole time? Or is this another part of the spell that makes no sense?

"Jim, I'm sorry, but you know I'm spoken for,” he mumbles, not doing anything to shrug them off of him.

“C’mon,” Jim says with a smile. “Admit it. He's cute.”

“Yes I am,” Stede nods.

Izzy looks like he's in real pain as he stares wearily at Stede, still lying on his back as Jim continues to rub his belly.

“Ugh, fine. But I'm not taking the blame when Blackbeard finds out. You know he hates dogs.”

Stede opens his eyes. Then, with a trepidation he can barely comprehend, he looks down at his body.

His very fluffy, dog-like body.

For #WIPWednesday, it’s time to start teasing my #OFMDBB25, and I’m so excited to collab with @bakerbelle.bsky.social and @rocketlollyart.bsky.social! This fic will probably be my most personal one yet, but I also plan to have a lot of fun with it, too. 🥰

Edward Teach has been sitting in his car for three hours. The car, a 1997 Ford Lazer, is turned off, and the radio and heater are dead. Which is fine. It’s whatever. It’s not like he has anywhere to go. But the thing is, it’s 3 o’clock in the morning, it’s the middle of winter, and it’s fucking freezing. The windows have completely frosted over. If Ed were to wipe his hand over the driver’s window, he’d see that the streets are blanketed with thick, grey mist, barely hiding the pale white fluorescent street lights glowing through. It’s the perfect setting for a horror movie, or one of those one-hour YouTube ambient videos with some lame title like it’s 3 o’clock in the morning and you’re sitting alone in your car.
