The science backing up the idea that race can make someone a good or bad scientist or airline pilot is as solid as the logic behind “orcs can’t be wizards” or “a hobbit can never become a great fighter.” This vision of racial rigidity, in which people can be sorted into categories that quantify their potential, has nothing to do with genetics; it is a political creation, a descendant of the same racist pseudoscience that was prominent in Tolkien’s time. In this sense, what we call “scientific racism” could be called “fantasy racism” instead, a belief that people can be reduced to quantifiable numbers, like so many digits on a character sheet. The races might be fantasy, but the effects of racism are real. After Musk’s DOGE gutted USAID, he insisted that “no one has died.” That wasn’t true. People had already died, and hundreds of thousands more will follow every year because America cut its food and medical aid to the world’s poorest. Anyone could have predicted this catastrophic human cost; Musk must not have cared. Perhaps he saw the dead of the global South as so many nameless orcs.

I’m willing to bet in the face of stupidity Elon’s worst is yet to come. In fact I’d be willing to bet his drug usage and his propensity for awkwardness are a quantifiable way to predict when he will say these things as well as using his rocket launchings and “going up up up up!!. Now down! Splat!!!

While I'm sympathetic to the previous post in this thread, this right here shows the limits of techno-utopianism. Prison isn't a technical solution to a specific problem! It serves several different functions, some of them conflicting, and none of them stable over time or easily quantifiable

prison is on some level essentially a technological fix to the societal problem of “need some assurance these people won’t do these things again” it’s not inherently insane to think that that aspect of it might one day be technically fixed (No, pedants, I’m not saying “we can do this today!”)

This is a false narrative and meant to attack the left. Trying to say all people calling for this are a very specific group. Not only is there no quantifiable way to prove that, but I’ve seen tons of people who voted for Harris and other Dems demand a change in leadership. Including myself.

Since the idea first sprang to life in the minds of sentient species across the universe, there has been a bizarre concept of assigning the value of goods and services into quantifiable bits and baubles such as coins or, worse yet, dead trees pulped and turned into all sorts of inane colors. At the outset of the idea, and on its face, it is a rather simplistic solution to a rather complex problem: if one were to want something as simple as an apple, how many furlongs of sheep's wool is that worth? It isn't an easy thing to calculate, and what if someone with a lot of apples doesn't need large swaths of anything to do with sheep, and yet, the original person would still very much like an apple. One could give the first person the apple, as something like an apple is a basic necessity to facilitate life. However, if one were to gift a morsel of food to a mere stomach rumble, how long before society crumbles under the weight of the age-old question: Why do we not just give everyone everything they would need to survive? It is an inevitable question in any post-scarcity world. However, whenever someone utters the phrase in public, no matter where they are, out of the woodwork oozes every economist, landlord, robber baron, and anyone who could make a profit off the suffering of others to silence them before it infects the minds of others. This, one must understand, is the true Goldist way-- as it is in various other parts of the universe with whatever manner of name they choose to give such principles. The inevitable gnashing and wailing of teeth that comes from daring to question the infallibility of Goldism will always make for a dreadful time. It always is when teeth begin to wail, no matter which part of the universe you find yourself in.

2) capital investment is absolutely a core part of the equation determining GDP
3) quantifiable just means measurable on a numerical basis
