I'm not sure I'm capable of understanding the arguments anymore, but if I remember rightly the main points were that a chemical wheel which only spins in one direction violates the principle of the reversibility of chemical processes and that it would function as a perpetual motion machine.

I'd feel more warm & fuzzy about the dictatorship's reversibility if just one institution were still balancing out the Executive Branch insanity. My personal last best hope was the military leadership, but as you pointed out, that's pretty much a no-show, too.
