I wonder if kids growing up in the third panel know what used to be underneath the pavement. Does the concrete hold the memory of the field? #Solastalgia #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome #UrbanEcology #Anthropocene

It took twenty years for the horizon to disappear. I made this to capture the specific sadness of watching the open fields of my childhood turn into concrete. It wasn’t just a change in scenery; it felt like the world actually got smaller. 🧵 #Urbanization #Nostalgia #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome

Results show that populations of woodland species have increased while open habitat specialists decreased or went locally extinct leading to biological homogenization.
Our baseline predates establishment of many #NATURA2000 sites.

🤔
Decent: "of an acceptable standard; satisfactory".
Both county obs and the OS have said decent nos. irt some passerines some days this past week.
Are those nos really 'decent'?
Or examples of #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome in Kent?
Are we really satisfied/accepting our declining trends?

Today extinct north of the alps, in the 19th century the gorgeous Common Rock Thrush was widespread in the valleys of the Middle Rhine and its tributary valleys. It lived around rocky areas, castles + steeples. It even nested in cavities in house walls in villages. 1/2

#ShiftingBaselineSyndrome
In Germany, the Common Rock Thrush is a rare bird of very few remote Alpine spots at high elevation in the South. This one is totally out of place up north at sea level on Heligoland island.

It's obvious that things are very, very bad in the natural world when what was not that long ago a widespread, seasonally common occurrence can now only be observed by a select few at a single location in a national park. 🌏 #shiftingbaselinesyndrome

Most people suffer from #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome and don't really notice how nature is disappearing before their eyes.

This, combined with our hustle culture, consumerism + ego cultivation, leads to a complete lack of understanding that intact nature is the basis of all life.

Feels like 'shifting baseline syndrome' as applied to liars and gaslighters which created the sludge we're currently wading through. Collective memory loss, blatant denial, and red tape are going to finally do us in.

And this is why EVERYONE, especially those with voices that can be heard like the media, needs to use the word “lie,” and call it out.

Because this is where @nytimes.com, @washingtonpost.com, @theatlantic.com, @nbcnews.com, and so many others are complicit in our destruction.
