Just a reminder, that possibly the oldest piece of palaeoart dates to the Neolithic. The petroglyphs of horned characters with trumpets, recorded on the same rock as a ornithischian footprints (Zagaje Formation) in Poland, might be an early reconstruction of the Jurassic tracemaker.

Best guesses for the original tracemaker include remipedes, an otherwise obscure group of crustaceans that only survive today in brackish submarine cave systems. But they do show up (repeatedly!) In Octonauts, and that makes me happier than it honestly should.

You might think I'd say yeti crab, but actually I most want to know what is the tracemaker of Palaeodictyon!!!

Wow, this is my first time seeing this 2023 article & its spectacular trackway - thanks! Agreed with the authors (who did terrific work) that the tracemaker was likely a decapod, but its size (& living in a lake) is mind-boggling. 🐾🦀

Lovely to actually see the tracemaker responsible for such a beautiful feeding traces in leaves! Paleontologists who study trace fossils like these preserved in fossil leaves then have better modern analogs for figuring out who ate them. #ichnology 🧪🐛🌿
Aha! The culprit is still here!
Glad that iNaturalist has informed me that it is called a "Zigzag Elm Fusehorn". What a great name!

The presence of a silesaurid is not unexpected considering traces of *Atriepus*, commonly considered to represent dinosaur-like trace makers such as silesaurids, are known from early-mid Late Triassic strata around the globe, and now known from the Jelm FM a few m below the Popo Agie FM. (14/x)

For #TrilobiteTuesday, a public artwork on trilobite traces, showing how the same trilobite tracemaker could've made different trace forms (= ichnogenera) from different behaviors & interactions with sediments; at Penha Garcia Ichnological Park at Naturtejo, UNESCO Global Geopark, Portugal. 🧪🐾🪨⚒️

These tracks date to the early days of amniote evolution, and while the identity of the tracemaker is uncertain, it would have been a relatively large tetrapod. Temnospondyls (stem group amphibians) seem to be good candidates, given the phalanges.

A single #fossil footprint can reveal lots: possible height, weight & even the tracemaker. In this case, it might have been Megalosaurus, a #dinosaur that lived in #England ~165 million-175 million yrs ago. #ichnology #paleontology #palaeontology 🧪⚒️ gizmodo.com/trace-fossil...
