Honestly true. Professional editors aren't your highschool buddy who is trying to highjack your story, they are people who are good at what they do, know what they are talking about, and actually are trying to make sure your work succeed.

Good editors do the opposite of watering down the author’s voice. They show it off. Like a house after decluttering, reorganizing and adding some spit and polish.

One more thing: people are homeless because they have been deprived of housing.

You solve homelessness with homes.

Today is World Homeless Day, and after years reporting on this crisis, I'll just say: homelessness is neither inevitable nor intractable. It's the result of choices—political, economic, moral—that can be unmade.

And this: how we treat the unhoused is a bellwether for the violence we will tolerate.

Congratulations to Maria Corina Machado, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize - her incredible optimism has already changed her country. I spoke to her, and wrote about her, at the beginning of this year:

Maduro is still in place, but a pro-democracy movement is transforming the beleaguered country.

🧵 In 2025, book censorship in the United States is rampant and common. Never before in the life of any living American have so many books been systematically removed from school libraries across the country.
Stack of books on a table with titles redacted by black bars. Headline reads: "The Normalization of Book Banning: What's Happening. What Can Be Done." PEN America logo appears at bottom.

before the summer two of my students asked me for reading recommendations. I suggested this book & we’re meeting to discuss it today.

sometimes reading literature needs to be divorced from the classroom & grades & be about fun & pleasure. I want to teach my students this.
