If it's all the same with them I'd rather they promoted the conspiracy with a medicine like Ozempic where someone else's uptake doesn't affect me, rather than vax, where it does.
adsquires.bsky.social
Yes, good point! Something to do with whether the sorts of people promoting the conspiracy theories might imagine themselves using it? Whether Jewish scientists were involved? Does seem rather arbitrary, now you've pointed it out.

Yes. America produces the finest of the "British food" discourses, everyone agrees.

(Although this was British irony and not a real American)
adsquires.bsky.social
It's exactly like conkers.
adsquires.bsky.social
It's all good. You can't have too much Chicken Tikka Masala info. (Or too much Chicken Tikka Masala)
adsquires.bsky.social
I was, but no need to apologize for educating Bluesky re Chicken Tikka Masala - thank you for the article!

(I toyed with the idea of replying "they're not Brits you dumbass coloniser they're Indians lol" but I think one can take irony too far)

Maybe if you Brits did a bit of cultural appropriation with your *food* it wouldn't be like boiled beans and cabbage.

Was so-called "Independent SAGE" set up to undermine trust in SAGE advice?
adsquires.bsky.social
Entirely false. Quite a few people were in both, much of the advice was the same - iSAGE would often quote and amplify SAGE's advice in theirs. It was set up when / because SAGE's advice wasn't published, so govt could lie and claim they were following it when they weren't. (Which was what happened)
adsquires.bsky.social
Yes, I think you meant to type "racism".

Two circular logos side by side. On the left is the Smart Air logo which reads ‘Smart Air’, in white lettering on a dark blue background. One the right is the Air Library Scotland logo which has a seal balancing a pinwheel on its nose. There are three lines curved at the end to indicate airflow. Text beside it reads “Air Library Scotland”.

Above the logos there is a heading which reads “we’re an affiliate!”.

Below the logos the body text reads “By using our referral link (in bio) when purchasing from Smart Air, you help to support our free lending library”.

something quite brain-melting about the hard right's position apparently now being "we hate all Muslims and distrust Muslim states, aside from that one Muslim place that still has slavery because that sounds fun"

Fascinating, hilarious radiolab with scientist / presented Ella Al-Shamahi, about her journey from very religious (creationist!) teen to expert on human evolution
@naomialderman.bsky.social @rli22.bsky.social you need to meet for a cup of tea / podcast! pca.st/episode/1518...

It you don't mind my saying, you don't seem to know much about Independent SAGE given your strength of feeling about them.
adsquires.bsky.social
This is easy to check because all of their reports and statements are publicly available. independentsage.org
Many examples of them citing + quoting SAGE in support of their arguments. No examples of them saying SAGE shouldn't be listened to. (Do you have any quotes for your claim?)

The thing is, for Manchester and the Parisian example, that might get you a "not murder" from diminished responsibility of whatever, but doesn't get you a "not antisemitic".
adsquires.bsky.social
You're comparing iSAGE - which had no power, isn't an arms length body, is just a group of scientists, and also, who publicized their membership and reasoning and evidence - with what's happening under Trump? Even if you disagree with their recommendations, don't you think that's a bit unfair?

😬 any chance there's good mechanical ventilation? (Have you checked with a CO2 monitor?)

We've got tutorials in our offices - quite a few undergrads off ill - luckily I can crack open a window and put a HEPA on the table, which will hopefully help a bit...
adsquires.bsky.social
Yes - adding up the costs of those hospitalisations and missed days of work. Even if they made them free to people who are in regular contact with vulnerable people (most likely to be hospitalised)...

A great summary of disease transmission. Why we know how diseases spread how they do.
And what that means for stopping disease spread.
Hint lots of stuff is airborne and there are low cost, low effort, high ROI controls including ventilation & air filters.

Latest covid data: after nearly a year of low covid levels, we're in another wave.

Good time to re-post my basic science explanations of how airborne diseases like covid spread, and how to lower risks if we can't isolate:
