HFT members had a busy week! On Wednesday, we participated in the Hamtramck Recreation Dept Trunk or Treat event, passing out books and donated food to the community. On Halloween, members showed off their creative side with some fun costumes!

Monday I attended the Wayne-Westland Teachers picket. They are in the middle of intense contract negotiations.

If educators are pushing back there is good reason.

Teacher working conditions are student learning conditions.

Bricks purchased for schools were found used in board members' homes and bars. A fence installed at a school was removed and placed at a board member's daughter's house. Board members demanded bribes from teachers to vote in favor of raises. The board paid itself $25k in unauthorized salaries.

In the early 1940s Hamtramck teachers went on strike over the firing of over 40 married teachers ("to balance the budget"), threats to fire any other teacher who married, and school board corruption.
