Just realized I never properly re-introduced myself. Hi, I’m Jason, aka @airlineflyer. I post about airplanes, airports, trains, public transit and travel. I co-host @flightradar24.com’s AvTalk podcast with @petchmo.bsky.social.

Looking forward to reconnecting with familiar names meeting new ones.

It’s right up against the active Northeast Corridor (Amtrak) and New Haven and Danbury lines (MNR), obviously, so you can get some fantastic Quality Train Content™ from the tower.

Happened to go to South Norwalk today and there was no way I was going to pass up a visit to the SoNo Switch Tower Museum.

It’s an amazingly preserved railroad switch tower from 1896, still equipped with its 68 “Armstrong” hand operated mechanical interlocking equipment. It finally closed in 1984.

Or just use one of the 95 other tracks

MNR is bizzaro LIRR.

In South Norwalk there’s a transfer to the Danbury branch, which runs every 3 HOURS. A few confused passengers didn’t know how to get to it and a customer service agent radioed to the train crew who *stopped it after departure* to go find and help them.

LIRR crews would have🖕

Yea but for a train station I want grab and go. GCT stinks for that.

Here’s a hot take: Grand Central Terminal is a beautiful headhouse but as a rail terminal actually kinda sucks.

Outside peak hours there’s really only one way on/off tracks, and we had to fight upstream against a thousand disembarking passengers to get to our departing train. Food/bev also stinks.

A rare ride on @mtametronorth.bsky.social today. It’s weirdly familiar but all a bit different than @mtalirr.bsky.social. The MNR ride is smoother than LIRR but I don’t think this M8 ever topped 60 MPH, which is depressing.

New Haven line trains are super busy today. GCT trains pushing 1,000 pax

Yea that’s what I’m getting at. This is bad.

Maybe it’s a Q. Maybe it’s also a D. Anything’s possible but we KNOW it’s an N.

This doesn’t say what stop you’re at or what’s next. It’s a route and destination indicators. No amount of reading maps or signs will tell you that at stations with multiple lines.
airlineflyer.net
Sure sure that’ll save the sinking ship

New Yorkers don’t need modern luxuries like route or destination indicators on their trains.

They just instinctively know in their gut that this is a Manhattan bound N train.

Still enjoyed it, though. Really bummed we’re not getting to Taiwan this year again. It’s so great.

There’s absolutely a big coffee culture there but honestly I was never really wowed by anything we had. None of it was strong enough.

That price………wtf

All buses all the time!

0/3 working OMNY machines at Atlantic Terminal.

Truly remarkable how bad this has gotten. They shouldn’t be allowed to conduct fare enforcement until this situation improves.

What’s next for DC transit?

It was a very funny video, though.

Makes your video yesterday look cute by comparison

It’s episode 340 of AvTalk — we discuss the Endeavor Air collision in New York, focus on ATC during the government shut down, a RAT deployment on an Air India 787, and, of course, our favorite version of the A340. www.flightradar24.com/blog/avtalk-...
