Random shoutout - I just started to read Data Engineering Design Patterns by @ssp.sh and it is full of tremendous inspiration, not only from a technical perspective, but also on how to effectively communicate data challenges. Getting pumped abt returning to work after paternity leave

Thanks, learned something new as always :)

And yeah, probably matters most for parents.
It is not so much the time to make the lunch box (though a few minutes extra for breathing help). It is the supply chain logistics, warehouse storage optimization and FIFO flow management wearing down on us…

I liked the article, but the headline itself is bound to spectacularly backfire if (when?) the AI bubble bursts too fast

A bit sad you both are focusing on a) , which is a bit sought, while I find b)/ external validity the most interesting 🙂

Ofc an “ideal” RCT is better than an “ideal” nat exp for internal identification. Ofc a crappy RCT is worse than a good nat exp.
Water is wet. Not much discussion here really.

I think for me the most compelling answer for "why fund basic research?" (and the one most relevant to the people doing the work) is that humans are curious and finding stuff out makes us happy and fulfilled. Science is a thing humans like. Life would be more dull and sad if we didn't do it.

It's always the same small circle of people talking to each other at the NBER—while the others quietly watch from the back or from their screens at home. Though I'm sure the institution was founded on noble intentions, nothing better captures the profession's insularity and quiet collusion.

Tip: Use pomace oil for cooking. Has less nutrients / vitamins and no taste, but all of that which there is in extra virgin olive oil is destroyed anyway at high temperatures. Eat your extra virgin only as raw (salads, drizzle, dressings), it’s a waste otherwise

Nice way of looking at it!

But I am missing what you mean by the “why she is telling it” assumption…?

What if I understand why that’s the case yet I still refuse to believe the math?

Bayes be damned.

That I totally agree - I blame our past leaders for putting us in the situation of having to slather your wannabe dictator’s backside with royal parades in order to win time. Humiliating, yet necessary atm

Eh - it was around 40bn$ right? About the size of the total military budget of Italy. France’s total military budget is 68.

FYI the EU provides already as much foreign aid as the US used to do. We could double it - sure - but as our most powerful former ally is quickly turning into an enemy, funds are going towards defense instead.

If not now… :)
Between brain drain, rampant corruption, regression of medical standards, and deterioration of actual military capabilities, Trump is clearly paving the way for it. Pray our governments can follow it through, and us voters being smart enough to vote for those who can. I am optimistic

Yap, understandably, they are redirecting that money towards defense and military to shore up where we are weakest exactly to be able to step up credibly. But a future where commonwealth countries and EU are western leaders, with the US as junior partner is possible
alemartinello.com
True, but the notion that “the US does everything alone” is very much false. The EU collectively provides as much foreign aid as the US used to.

The huge, gigantic difference is in military, not soft power capabilities.

The drones in Copenhagen have been a painful reminder at completing the preparations recommended by the 🇩🇰 government in case of sabotage to critical infra.

Last items: water for three days, emergency radio.

If you haven’t done it already, it is a good time to do it now!

“Perfect” markets I’d say. Monopolies and externalities are often very natural and stable equilibria.

Tip we got from a midwife: if you do it from early enough, do not be afraid of her getting her ears fully covered with water while holding her in the tub - the water sounds are familiar and comforting. Tested thrice and confirmed 👍

Sssh, do not break the bubble of the American pundit class, “the Europeans might enjoy decent healthcare, social safety nets and basic human rights, but they are lazy while we work a lot” is all they have left

If you're American, one point of concern is that we rank behind nearly every EU member in terms of employment rates. Only Spain, Italy, Greece, and Romania are lower than the US's 80.6%
