THRILLED to be back at @liveright.bsky.social with @giaquinta.bsky.social for my next book! I'm convinced that if we're to retain our humanity in the face of mounting technocracies and forces that want to make us into little atomized profit units, we've got to re-engage with big, bold, communal art.

Even if you never read the original script for AFTER THE HUNT (which has a vastly different finale), you probably have some questions about, uh, all that. I talked to screenwriter Nora Garrett about the changes that made it to the final film: www.indiewire.com/features/int...
‘After the Hunt’ Writer Nora Garrett Unpacks That Ending — and How Luca Guadagnino Pushed for Essential Changes
Spoilers: The original 'After the Hunt' script imagined a different conclusion for Julia Roberts' character. Luca Guadagnino was eager to change it.

I am firmly in the It Is Okay camp but I enjoyed Channing Tatum

Hahaha well they’d have had to tweak that bit for the genre

(There’s actually a little thing in the credits where I was like … they really could have done that and it might have made more money)

For about two minutes I actually thought that was where it was going and I’m still not totally convinced it shouldn’t have just gone for it

Perhaps the most interesting thing to me about ROOFMAN is how narrowly it avoided being a Christian Movie ™

Yeah, I still think it's my favorite, but I saw Aspen this year and that movie is so savage that I kind of love it

Fascinating! That's good to know!

I mentioned Her. But Hal is sentient, and Transcendence is also about a sentient AI, right?

But I’m the guy who had a blast with Saltburn as satire, so I get it

The one thing it does not succeed in being about is “#MeToo” or “cancel culture” or whatever

The text can just about bear that reading visually without completely cracking under its own weight, but just barely, and I don’t think it accomplishes its goals if that’s what it’s going for. But it’s there-ish, if you want to, well, hunt for it.

I have one more thing to say about AFTER THE HUNT, which is that there *is* a kind of twelve-dimensional meta-meta level on which you could choose to read it, where it’s about um, things that are about the thing it’s about? and if you want to go that way, Godspeed; it might be more fun that way

Like if you know this is going to happen you might be able to sit back and let it wash over you

I hope people are aware that I am not saying you should not watch movies like this. I am trying to make sure you can enjoy it

I feel like he’s one of the guys who feels fine about AI de-age-ing him
