VT Religion and Culture is truly such a gem of a department and is absolutely stacked with amazing and kind scholars. I’ve benefitted immensely from the generosity of my colleagues and know how much we all have given to our teaching and service. The shortsightedness of this decision absolutely blows

just got word that my department's being shut down. two things:

1. no, i'm not okay. i've no words for how hard i've worked for this department and this institution. i feel betrayed, frankly, though i know it's not personal.

2. we rocked, y'all. i've no words for how hard we rocked, either.

Truly feckless behavior on the part of my Dean!

Anyway, happy Monday! The Dean is shutting down my department - Religion & Culture, the only 1 of is kind in the country & home to the innovative Major in Humanities for Public Service. There is no immediate budgetary or political pressure for this decision

People think I'm biased against Jeff Bezos, but here's Sartoria F. Caraceni, widely considered one of the best bespoke tailoring houses in the world, commenting on Bezos's wedding suit.

"The most terrible, frightening, horrible tuxedo ever seen in my life. I'm really suffering"
A photo of Jeff Bezos in his tuxedo. The low armhole is causing the jacket to lift off his neck. A comment from Sartoria F. Caraceni on Instagram. It reads: "The most terrible, frightening, horrible tuxedo ever seen in my life. Omg .. [face palm emoji]. Elegance is not an empty word. I can't stand it. Really suffering ..."

Brad Lander: "I also need to thank some of the most important people in my life and on this campaign—I mean, of course, the NYT editorial board. Just kidding, of course: I love Wordle and Connections, but I really urge the Times to cancel their new feature 'Editorial Riddles.' No one likes those."

Just part of Adams’ riff on Cuomo - which came after he was asked about Cuomo winning Hasidic endorsements.

I don't think we can fight AI creep by weaponizing grades. Nobody learns anything if we decide our job is to be plagiarism mall cops. If we don't win this argument at the level of process, convincing students they CAN'T learn what we have to teach them if they outsource to AI, we won't win at all.

Extrapolating from history: the labor market will cannibalize mid-tier knowledge workers, burn out senior knowledge workers, then shout at colleges & govt for not making enough labor-market ready grads, then govt will blame moms for not making K-12 prepare kids for college pre-labor-market skills.

This is exactly the problem. If AI can do the work of a junior team member, it still needs to be supervised and managed—so how do you teach that?

Was at a conference dinner a while back and one guy said "The future is AI. It doesn't replace senior developers, but no more need for juniors."

To which i replied:

"Where do you think senior developers come from. Straight from the womb?"

He went quiet, then wandered off to a different huddle.

One of the historical stories I think about is how the world kind of let the Netherlands off the hook with the whole “global slavery and brutal colonialism” thing.
cockremover.bsky.social
oh the dutch aren't that bad haha, they just do some blackface and conversion therapy and driving into buildings with tractors haha it's all just quirky little things

Spent the afternoon reading Tufte's, *The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint.* It's an excellent analysis of why PPT hampers thought & he argues for using technical papers and illustrated handouts. These tools aid an audience in assesing credibility and understanding information in context. Very cool.
