In two hours, Alvis Cyrille Jiyong Jang from estas will be joining us the the Old College in Edinburgh, and online, to talk about Korean culture & Autistic people in Korea. Fiona from AMASE will also give a short talk about AMASE and Scotland. We will have the help of a volunteer interpreter, Lois.

I came across Estas some time ago through a document they submitted to the UN Committee for the Rights of the People with Disabilities. It seems like an interesting self-advocacy group, though I couldn't find much info about it at the time.

Paracetamol (Tylenol) does not cause autism, and it is a source of great dismay that autism researchers and Autistic advocates still have to spend so much time battling misinformation.

Research on causes of autism systematically fails to control for the existence and behaviour of Autistic parents.

On the 24th, I had the opportunity to present the findings of a survey on autism assessment experiences—a vital research piece that brought together Scottish Autism, ARGH, AMASE, and SEMA.

Although the research was conducted in 2023, the situation has actually declined for Autistics in Scotland.

Postscript: vaccines absolutely do not cause autism.

This has been investigated extremely thoroughly. There is simply no association between vaccination and autism. Being vaccinated definitely does not increase your chance of being Autistic.

Again and again, studies that actually ask people what autism research should prioritise find that the funding landscape bears little relation to stakeholders' priorities.

There are many important outstanding questions about autism that absolutely do need researching.

Very few of them have anything to do with the causes of autism.

By and large, as it turns out, Autistic people do not want to be prevented.

Less than 9% of this huge survey's Autistic respondents said they'd take a 'cure'.

Just as importantly, research on causes of autism takes resources and time away from research which has the potential to provide tangible benefits to Autistic people - as well as our families, those who work with us, and wider society.

Causes are mostly interesting if you want to prevent something.
