Hinata jumped to wrap his arms around his neck, full-on sobbing now. Kageyama didn’t realize it, but he was crying too.

"I'm sorry," Hinata gritted through his tears, pressing himself even closer. "I'm just so glad you’re here now. You make my life better. Everything."

But at last, Kageyama felt a smile graze his lips as he said, "These last two months were hell. And when I hit my lowest, they called me. For this thing. They wanted to make sure I was going to come. I didn’t think, I just said yes. It woke me up. I could still fight for this."

Words had never come easily for Kageyama, but he knew he had to make his next ones count.

So he moved to delicately cradle Hinata’s face, gently brushing his wobbly bottom lip with the tip of his finger.

"I really wanted to at first," he managed to croak out. His next words—

Once words started to spill out of him, they didn't stop. Hinata's face grew guilty, heartbroken even, as he unburdened his heart.

"And I've got to say, I never wanted us to break up. I just… wanted you to do something. I believed you’d rush here. But you just stopped caring."

They still refused to let go of each other, basking in the comfort of each other’s arms.

It was Hinata who broke the silence first.

"I only brought a date tonight because I was hoping you’d see a picture and get jealous," he admitted, nuzzling his face into Kageyama’s chest.

It was strangely familiar, the way they both treated it like a competition. And between their rushed m0ans there were also giggles, soft "I missed you so" or "You’re perfect."

It was only when they reached their high that they took a moment to savor it. Them. Together at last.

He thanked the gods for having a room in that hotel. And also for the fact that no one stood in their way to privacy.

They fell onto the bed still in a haze, like nothing else mattered but pushing each other to the limit, to be the one to draw the sweetest sounds from the other.

"What do you say we get the hell out of here?" Kageyama rasped, his hands twitching to tear away any layers between them.

Hinata just nodded, his lips never parting from Kageyama, but leaving marks everywhere he could reach.

So Kageyama blindly made his way to the elevator.

He'd had the chance to see Hinata happy many times in his life, but he could swear this was something more.

So Kageyama pulled him back into a kiss, sighing against his lips. He lifted him into his arms so Hinata could wrap his legs around him. Even then, he wasn’t close enough.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry I'm so late," Hinata whispered, coming up for air between kisses. "I knew once I started I wouldn't be able to stop, so I had to take care of a few things first."

He smiled at him with that toothy grin of his and Kageyama's heart soared.

When Kageyama’s pride got the better of him, he was suddenly crushed against the wall by a familiar weight. He instantly recognized the lips he used to call home. Hinata’s.

Kissing him like he needed it to breathe, with an urgency as if they had to make up for all the lost time.

But he wished he had a sign, anything, to tell him he still stood a chance, that he had a reason to linger here, offstage. That he wasn’t just losing his last shred of dignity.

The small ceremony soon came to an end. Kageyama stayed in the background, about to give up.

Other speeches followed. Hinata purposefully avoided his gaze, even when he had to let go of his hand. At some point, Kageyama was naturally pushed to the side. His heart sank.

He wasn’t mad. Hinata’s duty for the night was to be in the spotlight. And he looked so good doing it.

He had no clue what Hinata felt like as he now faced him, still teary-eyed, and brushed his lips against the corner of his mouth. Not exactly a kiss, technically, but neither a rejection.

Interlacing their fingers, Hinata kept him close as he said his thanks to the public.
