"why didnt they just teach themselves how to read novels at 5 like i was doing?" (i say that as someone who DID DO THAT!)

Universities are teaching English literature students how to concentrate long enough to read lengthy novels.
Some institutions are offering "read-ing resilience" courses for students facing long texts and reading lists, while others are using book jacket design as part of the assessment process.
Academics said students in the last five to ten years, who have grown up with phones in their pockets, can be intimidated by reading long, older or more difficult books, and the jump from A-level. The popularity of English at A-level has fallen from the most popular subject to outside the top ten.
Canterbury Christ Church University axed its English literature degree last year, Bournemouth University is winding up its course and Sheffield Hallam merged it with language.
To attract more students to the sub-ject, some universities are allowing students to tailor or design their degrees and give extra support in how to write essays or read critically to cope with the leap from A-level.
Assessments at Southampton include blogs and journals, while students at the University of the West of England can "demonstrate knowledge creatively and critically across... different forms including field trip reports, book re-views, book jacket designs, book pitches and podcasts".

Kent University says students can tailor their studies according to their in-terests, exploring poetry, drama and prose but also "queer zines, films, artist books and video games".
Hull University has a compulsory module where students choose what books to read. It says: "You'll get the chance to work with tutors to create a personalised reading list, exploring texts that challenge and inspire you." John Mullan, professor of English at University College London, said:
"When I was a student, I don't think people who taught me gave a damn about students' opinions and they didn't need to ... (now) if we want them to do something that's not at the forefront of their wishes, we have to do a job of explaining or persuading." Elsewhere in London, Brunel University says its teaching is shaped around the goal of developing students'
"reading resilience"
Robert Eaglestone, the literary critic, is professor of contemporary literature and thought at Royal Holloway Uni-versity, said: "When we induct our students on to the course, we give them advice on reading: put the phone out of the room. Be aware it takes time to get into the rhythm of a novel."

Yeah it's BAD that current college/university students literally CAN'T READ
They read words but cannot parse sentences, they see ONE word & make up a thing that allows them to intake it but it's wrong, etc
ITS BAD, BUT ITS NOT THEIR FAULT, MAN

I will say, I don't particularly like when ppl look at the worrying trend of illiteracy and lacking media literacy and blame the zoomers/alphas in a "haha that generation is stupid" framing

I think plots that have "yearning and miscommunication" are just interesting to me, while "established relationship encounters problems, or are just normal and healthy" plots just aren't
So it's sometimes less about "the ship" and more about the plot choices for me

Yeah once a ship I enjoy goes canon I am basically like "ok im done now, thanks, later"
Often the "way" ships go canon also isnt to my tastes
Like if it was like all the fic tropes i enjoy, sure, but i typically dont see them do that in published media

For me, part of the thrill and fun of a romance in media is not knowing if it’ll happen!!! That uncertainty is the spice I need to elevate the dish!

I was explaining to my husband how I prefer shows where I don’t know if two characters will get together, over a specifically romance show where we’re told in advance character A and character B get together

There’s something about knowing that causes my interest to disappear
