Every academic career is built on rejection, but we don’t show it.

CVs list publications, grants & awards, not rejected manuscripts, unfunded proposals, or failures.

But those invisible rejections shape us more than our successes ever do.

It might be hard to convey to people outside economics just how seismic this is. The Trump effect has most certainly arrived to US academia.

Takeaway from this article (now with page numbers!): men support political gender quota/ parity laws less than women (whether legal quotas exist in their country or not), but people *do not* believe women elected in a system with quotas are less qualified / support them less. Because…: they aren’t!

I am also super interested, wonder if they have other initiatives on this 🤔 (and it reminded me to book Santa visit which has been open since like July).

Women’s descriptive representation has more limited impact:

👩‍💼 More women MPs? → no effect on positions or salience
👩‍🔧 A woman leader? → we see more focus on gender-based violence (but we note this is based on relatively few women leaders)

Using original, hand-coded text analysis of PRR party manifestos (30 parties, 25 European countries, 1984–2022), we find:

🔹 Vote loss → more mentions of women’s rights
🔹 BUT no shift to egalitarian positions
🔹 Instead, parties adopt risk-averse (neutral) or femonationalist stances
anacweeks.bsky.social
We argue PRR parties engage in strategic window dressing:

⚖️ When they’re losing votes, they highlight women’s interests in their manifestos.

But → this attention is superficial, not transformative.

Populist Radical Right (PRR) parties are often seen as Männerparteien—men’s parties.

But in recent years, many have added women’s interests to their agendas.

❓But are these genuine shifts in gender ideology, or tactical moves?
