A big win for one of California’s smallest native mammals 🎉

The CA Fish and Game Commission voted unanimously today to declare the Pacific pocket mouse a candidate species under the California ESA, granting protections for them as the state conducts a yearlong review.

This is a redwing, a member of the thrush family. Like other thrushes, it has dots on its abdomen. And in this case, more dark grey dots running from its head and down its back. So, a spotted bird.

This photo shows a mainly grey bird perched on a branch. It is facing left, looking a bit up. Its abdomen is white with some darker dots. There are patches of red just under its grey wings.

This is the great spotted woodpecker. It also has some spots. So a twofer there.

This buzzard was spotted by my eagle eyed kid. It also has a few spots. So another twofer!

Crow clocked the camera - I got spotted!

Anyone free on actual Halloween night? Come to Whitby, I'll guide you gently through memories of 1970s/80s Halloweens ("The sky is blue, the grass is green") and there'll be music, dressing up, sweets etc. I might even do the "Witches of Halloween" song from 'Words and Pictures'. A fiver. A FIVER!
