A year ago I walked up to the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory on my first day back in Oxford after a bit more than a decade. Today, I’m between thinking “gosh how’s it been a year already” and “has it really only been a year”. Excited to see what year #2 will bring 🤩

After much umming & aahing, I’ve finally decided to update our group name/logo. I’m not a natural overthinker, but this definitely proved fertile ground for an extensive crisis of confidence 🙈 In any case, here’s the new one. And credit to @inkscape.org for not breaking at my limited skills 😅

As peak tourist season approaches in Oxford, I am particularly enjoying early mornings in my College office with a view of the calm and empty front quad ☺️ I treasure my early mornings at work as they provide space to think and write amongst the craziness of everyday life as an academic 🌟 #OxfordLife

New paper alert! Who knew V incorporates into the A-site of a MAX phase? We were surprised! And then we tried all 3d metals... check out how it influences the magnetism of Nb2SnC.
Great collaboration with @bluebananna.bsky.social and others! #MAXPhases #chemsky #matsky

Lovely morning train journey to Teddington to visit the National Physical Laboratory for the @uksaf.bsky.social meeting today ☀️ Looking forward to a great program and my invited talk on an exciting interface explored using #HAXPES 💪

Christmas came early 🤩 I am incredibly fortunate to step into the (giant) footsteps of St Edmund Hall’s inorganic chemists, including Mike Mingos, who has kindly gifted me his extensive collection of crystal structure models. A dream for any solid state chemist and an incredibly useful resource 💛🧡❤️

And it’s a wrap 🎁 Final work day done and at least part of the to do list complete. Fantastic Fellows Christmas dinner in College to round off my first term back at Oxford and now on my final commute home for 2024 🚂 See you in the New Year, Oxford! 🍾🥂 #OxfordLife #ReadyForChristmas

Final work day pre-Christmas and about to head out for our group Christmas lunch 🎄 Going stereotypically Oxford by having it at the KA. We always used to go for group drinks there during my DPhil so nice to continue this tradition 🙌 The photo is from an early morning walk to work the other day 🧡

The countdown to Christmas is truly on now 🎄 A couple more days filled with admission meetings, ALL those thing I promised myself to get done before the holidays, and Christmas lunches and dinners 🙌 #BusyFinale #AlmostThere #OxfordLife

It’s actually been ok. Not too chilly walking to work in comparison to sitting in my College office which thanks to single glazing and wonky windows had been at a steady 10 degC which is a touch too chilly for me 🙈

This week has been a week of (coffee fuelled) early mornings ☕️ With undergraduate admissions in full swing I needed those extra hours in the morning to keep up with everything else 😅 Oxford feels extra special pre sunrise with hardly any people around 🌙 #OxfordLife #MagicalSpires

A fantastic week at #F24MRS is coming to an end. Lots of great science and the opportunity to catch up with old friends and new 💙 Big shout out to the @roysocchem.bsky.social grant for carers who made it possible for me to be here with my 2yo in tow 💪 #TravellingScientist #AcademicMama

How about switching from Li and Na-based battery materials to fluorine ones? 💡 @brentmelot.bsky.social providing a convincing case to get creative with F ions at #F24MRS 💪 🔋

Start of another day of #F24MRS and thick snow on the 30th+ floor of my hotel ❄️ Energy levels are somewhat running low at this point of the week and it’s tempting to crawl back into bed and watch the snow fall, but plenty of great science still to come 💪 #KeepGoing #TravellingScientist

Really fantastic work by @virtualatoms.bsky.social on searching (theoretically) for crystalline anisotropic dielectrics 🙌 Check out atomate2 if you wanna have a go yourself: materialsproject.github.io/atomate2/

Hahaha - good luck! There are so many options available depending on what you want. If you want a second opinion always happy to chat 😉

Joel Varley from LLNL always promises high quality oxide theory and once more he didn’t disappoint 🤩 A true tour-de-force of gallium oxide theory and the complexity not only of oxygen defects but also gallium vacancies 🙌 #UWBG #OxidesAreFun #ItsComplicated

Inspiring talk by @lonepair.bsky.social at #F24MRS including fascinating assessments of the traditional roles of modelling and experiment compared to the role of the data-driven approach „Captain“ 🧑‍✈️

Oh yes! I love the variety of the MRS but it’s also a challenge to decide which sessions to spend time in
