"The administration is laying the groundwork for subjecting speech critical of it to suppression and prosecution. There are indications that new crackdowns on dissent, on dissenters, and on the institutions that employ them and their funders, are imminent."

College Students and Faculty Resist Trump’s “Free Speech” Funding Scheme

House Speaker Mike Johnson has repeatedly refused to seat Democrat Adelita Grijalva, who won a special election more than three weeks ago and would be the final signature needed to force a vote on the Epstein files.

Now, Arizona's AG is threatening to sue. The full story in today's newsletter -->

Again, this is not what needs to be done. "Why are you breaking the law & violating the Constitution & your oath of office?" is the question. When he doesn't answer it, the next journalist needs to ask it, & then the next one, & the one after that. Stop giving him & John Thune free passes every day.
FOX: You said last week that you would swear in Grijalva whenever she wants. She has written a letter to your office. You have not sworn her in. Doesn't your resistance add fuel to the fire that this is about Epstein?

MIKE JOHNSON: No. This is another partisan manufactured thing

I don't understand why U.S. reporters so regularly seem to let politicians get away with 'I haven't seen that' about stuff a) they obviously know and b) is directly relevant to their job. Did they sign some kind of agreement never to ask a follow-up question?
REPORTER: We know the president moved forward with mass layoffs. We're also learning there were significant cuts to staff at special education services. Are you comfortable with those cuts?

MIKE JOHNSON: I haven't seen the specifics of that and I don't know

The New York Times knows crime is not “out of control” in major U.S. cities — in fact, crime is way down from past years and decades — but NYT amplifies JD Vance’s lie without a fact check.
It’s journalism malpractice that helps the fascists.

Angus: Who else are you going to give military bases to? When’s Vladimir Putin getting his rocket bases in the United States?
Quite the oopsie.
The Trump administration on Saturday scrambled to rescind layoffs of hundreds of CDC scientists who were mistakenly fired on Friday night in what appeared to be a substantial procedural lapse.

"Roughly 70 Epidemic Intelligence Service officers — the so-called “disease detectives” who respond to outbreaks around the globe — received layoff notices"

There is no 'make healthy' objective here, but there will be costs and consequences, to readiness, safety, and lives.
FULL STORY HERE: Emails began flooding CDC inboxes late Friday night announcing dozens of layoffs. HR people brought back from furlough to oversee the RIFs. Disease detectives, entire Washington office, global health, injury prevention, MMWR staff among those hit.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.

That sound you hear is plaintiff lawyers popping champagne corks and DOJ lawyers groaning.
Q: How many layoffs have you authorized?

TRUMP: It'll be a lot. And it'll be Democrat-oriented.
Can you imagine if Joe Biden ever said anything this nonsensical?
So much for Trump being a good businessman. A used jet is waaaay cheaper than the rights to build and operate a military base in the US.

MIT makes compelling case, as it rejects the university “compact,” making it clear that the Trump administration’s proposal is fundamentally inconsistent with the very values it claims to embrace.

This is what principled leadership looks like. 👏

“The document also includes principles with which we disagree, including those that would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution. And fundamentally, the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone.

“In our view, America’s leadership in science and innovation depends on independent thinking and open competition for excellence. In that free marketplace of ideas, the people of MIT gladly compete with the very best, without preferences. Therefore, with respect, we cannot support the proposed approach to addressing the issues facing higher education.”
