My latest for @rollingstone.com digs into Trump's $30 Billion in shutdown cuts targeting Democratic states and cities with painful cuts to public transit, energy, and fundamental civil rights protections.
The pain will reverberate throughout the economy.

FYI - Barrasso named Indivisible the organization today, not co-founder Leah Greenberg whose name is associated with the "Indivisible.org" account I linked to.

During the shutdown, I've watched as Republicans pushed through new rules to weaken climate, environmental, and Indigenous peoples protections in Alaska, while CNN now reports that Predictions for the deadly Alaska storm may have suffered due to DOGE cuts.

Now speaking in the Senate, Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-WY) invoked the oh-so-old-school image of a stagecoach heading off a cliff to depict where the Democrats are taking the government, naming @indivisible.org as holding the reins and "calling the tune" dictating the Democrats behavior.

4000 federal workers have been fired since the shutdown, with more coming and the Republicans have canceled voted again this week. “For the Republicans, cruelty is the point,” said @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social today. Reaffirming that Democrats are ready to meet “anytime” to end the shutdown.

Coal miners are headed to DC to protest Trump today. Judith Riffe's husband was a coal miner, he died in March of complications from black lung disease. She said miners deserve an administration that would fight for them as hard as it fights for the coal companies.

The telehealth and in-home hospital care programs for Medicare recipients allow doctors and hospitals to bill Medicare for telehealth appointments and in-home visits from nurses to provide care that is generally only available in hospitals.

The shutdown has prevented Congress from extending them.

While Duffy has gutted policies or programs that relate “in any way to #climate change, ‘greenhouse gas’ emissions, #racial equity, #gender identity, ‘diversity, equity and inclusion’ goals, environmental justice or the Justice 40 initiative.”

Trump Is Using the Shutdown to Supercharge His War on Equity
Donald Trump's $30 billion in shutdown cuts targeting Democrats will harm the entire economy, hitting women and people of color the hardest.

I just wrote about Sean Duffy (aka, one part of the long-running reality TV marriage") for @rollingstone.com
Duffy is a climate skeptic and pronatalist, who has directed the Dept of Transportation “to give preference to communities with marriage and birth rates higher than the national average.”

In response to Trump, “fact-checking and satire are necessary. The fact-checking won’t convince any MAGA cultist, but it’s still important, in the face of authoritarian deception, to keep as close a record of history as possible.” @jeetheer.bsky.social

I disagree. These were historic amounts of money flowing from the federal government to states, localities, and nonprofit organizations.

Trump's policies are racist and sexist. Racism and sexism are exceptionally expensive, finds labor economist Valerie Wilson, director @epi.org Program on Race, Ethnicity, & the Economy. Her research finds that reducing discrimination is a financial boon for everyone, worth over $4,932 per person.

“The health implications are really significant,” Congresswoman-elect Adelita Grijalva (D-Ariz.) tells me. Clean transit and energy protect public health and the climate, reducing pollution and the carbon footprint, she says. “These projects were already authorized” by Congress."

My latest on the Shutdown Shakedown:
The Biden-Harris administration "went and listened to people in the community” to learn what projects were needed, “and financing flowed from those discussions,” Michele Roberts of the Environmental Justice Health Alliance.

10 years ago @jeffgoodell.bsky.social talked to President Obama about the climate crisis for a Rolling Stone cover. So much has changed but the threat remains and we simply haven't done enough.

Been thinking about this quote from my 2005 book, The Bush Agenda, and how Trump keeps trying to entice "enemies" to attack.
Joint Chief of Staff Admiral William J. Crowe once told Colin Powell:
"First, to be a great President you have to a war. Two, you have to find a war where you are attacked."

These are no longer "warnings." The fossil fuel pollution is already destroying our air and atmosphere. The pollution is already filling our lungs. It's already killing people (as well as canaries and other animals and species). People are already running out of the mine in search of safety.
