Eviction Diversion, things like rental assistance and eviction defense programs, can greatly help play a role in preventing homelessness. Funding and supporting programs that help provide assistance to families is a powerful first step in preventing a quick downward spiral.

The department has not yet released data showing how many of those students were accepted into the program, but any that were accepted would be children whom the state was not already paying to educate, but are now getting funds, said Jennifer Rainville, an education policy attorney at the center.
