I post about animals, alive and extinct, and the insane, often obscure things they do. Often about hunting and fighting.

If that interests you, feel free to follow, I guess.

I saw the early Patreon version of Hunted by Moonlight.

Best Dilophosaurus in media (granted, there aren’t that many, I think).

Surely calling this a “reptilian monster” while making it look like a saber-toothed dog would tip off even the most brain-rotted Facebook user?

Possibly that, and the fact that all manatee species utilize freshwater limits their potential to meet marine predators (salties, sharks, orcas). Dugongs, as strictly saltwater animals, aren't so lucky.

I think I’ve read accounts of modern sirenians ramming things too, so this would track

Oh, in case you were wondering how manatees defend themselves. They:

- are quite big
- have good senses of touch+hearing
- are capable of short bursts of speed (even if they're relatively slow)
- have thick skin
- have girthy bodies that are hard to grasp
- dive deeper

Looking at Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal interviews, old Tarzan cover art, old stop motion creature battles, and the art I commissioned, I think I realized…I’m actually a sucker for certain pulp stories. Particularly the ferocious man or beast fighting like hell kind.

Manatee anatomy is actually pretty weird and cool

I'm not even sure that it does, at least at the canine teeth (although, hyenas can disembowel live antelope much larger than themselves). Certainly wouldn't hurt if it did, though.

Real life isn’t an RPG where +3 weapons over your foe=victory. To be Captain Obvious, if your foe has even just one lethal weapon and can land an attack, your risk of injury or death is high, whether you’re armed to the nails as well as the teeth or not.

…but most claws are also not built for causing fatal wounds. That is why even in most grappling predators the mouth is still, in the overwhelming majority of cases, the killing tool. Some animals can also soak up damage better.
ausarchosaur.bsky.social
This fascinates me b/c it’s not REALLY about weapon quantity in and of itself. It’s about applying that weaponry+damage output.

Claws & the likes can certainly cause damage and grappling limbs can make it easier to apply a killing blow…

Also I love that this is teeth and claws vs…just teeth

Spotted hyenas get into one-on-one skirmishes with leopards quite often for a renowned pack-hunting species. It actually makes sense once you realize that most spotted hyena hunts are actually solitary.

In the Primal-verse, EVERY real life lineage of flying animals has a giant representative.

Okay, this one’s pretty interesting too. I have no idea what the fuck this is.

This is the creature I’m most interested in. Pretty neat demon carnivoran thing. The flat head sort of reminds me of some fossil metatherian predators, but I’m pretty sure this is just a coincidence.
