Twilight paints the sky and the rocky shoreline at the House of Refuge at Gilbert's Bar with the fading light of the day. The currents of this island are seen in the ocean waves coming ashore during low tide and as twilight beautifully illuminates the clouds as they sweep across the sky.

Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge located on Hutchinson Island, Florida.
Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge was built in 1876 and is the last surviving house of refuge of 10 originally built all along Florida’s coast to aid shipwreck victims. Florida's house of refuge program started between 1876 to 1886 due to the need to prevent the high loss of life and sailing ships from hurricanes and dangerous reefs in a then largely unpopulated Florida. This historic building is on a picturesque portion of beach called the St. Lucie Rocks. Outcroppings of Anastasia limestone line the shoreline.

Take a moment to sit back and observe this painting. Do you feel it? It's warm and a little humid, there's a slight breeze. The green scent of nature rises around you as you lie back in the soft grass, damp on your back. Birds are quiet in the midday heat, but the almost imperceptible buzz of busy insects rises to meet your ears. The burble of the nearby brook lapping the stream bed plays harmony to their toil. Your mind submits to Nature's demand for attention. It is moments such as these that are forever etched in our psyche, calling themselves up at the most unexpected times. The day can be hot, the grit and clang of the city an assault on the senses, but then you pass by a fountain surrounded by flowers. Suddenly, and for just a moment, you are transported. Somehow through the noise, you hear the bees on flowers and feel the mist from the fountain as it whispers over you with its damp feel and wet scent. The sun on your skin is hot, and you are there again, by that burbling brook, for just a moment. Perhaps this is how we survive a world of our own making. Internalizing and retreating to the natural when overload threatens to overtake us.

An impressionistic, natural landscape that will add tranquility to any space.
