My poem Memory of Las Mariposas. I was inspired by In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez November 25 is The International Day Against Violence Towards Women, now called the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It commemorates the lives of the Mirabal sisters who were three ordinary women who opposed Rafael Trujillo's dictatorship in the Dominican Republic and, as a result, were killed by the dictator. It is also a day marked to remember those who have fallen victim to violence and to stop violence done to women.
