Terry and the Pirates by Milton Caniff from October 12, 1941. The last Sunday strip before the death of Raven Sherman, which was a widely reported event in popular culture at the time.
Terry and Dude Hennick are worried about Raven, who is resting in a tent due to her injuries. She is in a bad shape so they create a gurney and attempt to travel but do not make it far before running out of water. They try to give Raven hope but she has accepted that she is dying. She asks them to stop so she can watch the sun come up one more time.

I know I read some of those as a kid but not since they first came out so I don't remember any details.

Movie night at my dad's. I should probably mention that he grew up watching the Kirk Alyn serials in the theaters & the George Reeves series on tv.
