“You look ill,” Othelia observed glaring down at the young lord. “What has happened to you? You were in good health when we allowed you passage home.” Tokonus had not been the only one to notice that something was wrong with [redacted]. His appearance wasn’t the only thing off; there was a sound to his voice that the Lukshen could hear as well. A slight delay or echo that Tokonus was sure that no one else would hear. “No – no I can’t...,” [redacted] mumbled addressing the air above his shoulder. After a muted back and forth, the sickly man turned back to the lord and lady shivering. “Just... just help me. I – I have information. I can... I can help you too, so please, I beg you to help me.” He had avoided the question and Tokonus’ eyes turned toward Othelia. For a moment she allowed her emotional mask to slip, and it was clear that she was uncomfortable as well. Whatever was wrong with [redacted], it was severe, and he would need treatment if they were to have a productive conversation. More importantly, they needed to consider that he might have been contagious. An unknown pathogen would be far worse than anything that [redacted] or Constance could ever do to them.

Nia was in the back seat with her first-aid kit open, wrapping some bandages around Elise's chest. I carefully did not look in the mirror at Elise with her shirt off. Adrenaline does all kinds of things to a person. To distract myself, I said in an only-somewhat-squeaky voice, "What in the living hell was that? What kind of mage can do that kind of thing?" Nia responded without looking up from her task, "Don't ask me. What I want to know is, how did he dodge my fucking bullets?" "He was a psi, a teep. He was reading your mind, maybe also screwing with your aim," I told her. "I distracted him by occupying my mind fully with how deeply screwed we were just long enough to get a shot in."

Ash gives me a long, slow blink. “You're unbelievable." I grin weakly. “Would it help if I said sorry? Again?" She scoffs and starts dusting herself off, the picture of someone clinging to patience by a thread. "You never make it easy, do you?" But before she can verbally annihilate me, the portal behind me flashes again. First comes Poof, sailing through with all the grace of a disgruntled loaf, landing beside me in that very position, accompanied by a pitiful whine that very clearly translates to "Why are we on the ground, you walking catastrophe?" I let out a nervous chuckle and try to reposition myself into something resembling a casual seated pose, trying to salvage this situation, even though my dignity is bleeding out somewhere in the grass. Poof, the fluffy ball-shaped animal familiar of Veyla (the FMC in Star*Relic). She has white fur, dark purple eyes, and a long, fluffy tail. She transforms into a large saber-toothed tiger mount form when needed. Floons, the species Poof is. I designed this card for the Elemental Tides card game included in my WIP story.
