High levels of chemicals are produced by the body early in infection to mobilise the infection fighting cells.

Those chemicals also irritate the heart making it jumpy.

And by jumpy, I do mean dead.

Oh yeah, masks protect you from flu, RSV, and more, too.

If you don't find our present dire enough to warrant masking, then where is your bar?

Where was it in 2020? 2021? ...2022? .....2023?

When did it shift, & why?

What did you read/who told you something that moved the needle? Does it hold up to scientific or your own moral scrutiny, considering?
We can admit that the feeling of shame can not only be constructive, but also deeply corrosive—whether one internalizes shame or is prompted to the emotion by others’ disapproval. But so, too, are some of the moral and personal failures that give rise to that disapproval. In some cases, these are poisonous enough to merit the harsh medicine of shame and shaming. If not during the rise of fascism, then when?

Very few of us are moral saints—certainly not me. Unlike everlasting, lofty, abstract principles, we who try feebly to live up to them down in the muck of reality face mucky obstacles: we get tired, impatient, envious, and angry. Our values and principles ask more than most of us are able to give—if they don’t, they are probably too weak to be worth holding. But we don’t have to celebrate our failures or, worse still, confuse them with our successes. This is one valuable function of shame: it reminds us of who we want to be when we fall short, a goalpost that is necessarily anchored to the lofty height that our conduct fell beneath. We also encourage and defend these general social standards when we hold others to them, and not just ourselves.

perhaps you too will come to see a mask as an antidote, however small, to so many of the societal ills preventing us from movin the needle as we could; to mask, i'd argue, is directly counter to that cynicism. it is an action imbued with hope—backed up by real physical prevention—for a better world.
itsbabs.bsky.social
a mask is the thing you’re looking for. it is the visible reminder of how things have changed, that you acknowledge we are not coveted “normal” times—but unlike donation-earned tote bags or symbolic beaded bracelets, the mask is community care in both form & immediate function.

we’re in an extraordinary time that calls for extraordinary action. wearing a respirator may not feel extraordinary, but when masks are stigmatized if not criminalized, it becomes so.

it’s a helluva lot harder to #Resist without your health—preserve what you & your community have. mask up.

last night, someone on tiktok asked
me how wearing a mask is antifascist, so i answered: unfortunately, even passive, austere eugenics works faster if YOU participate.

so step up: stand out, mask up, and take care take care take care for yourself & others—before those who seek to harm stop you.

we are in an unprecedented untenable situation: wanton destruction of federal public health apparati (already reduced by biden), on top of a precarious, ever consolidating for-profit “care” system that’s been inching toward collapse for yrs as insurance rates soar—& you won’t help prevent illness? 🤨

even the smartest folks whose takes i otherwise appreciate, who otherwise want to resist fascism themselves & encourage others to, find wearing a mask in, at least, public indoor spaces—to prevent the harms of this administration from impacting others—to be a bridge too far; it’s shameful, frankly.
jamellebouie.net
yeah, i think a commitment to public health obligates you to get vaccinated and, when you are sick, do what you can to avoid spreading that to other people. the demand that one mask at all times in public spaces is, i think, unreasonable.

Welp—CDC’s entire data team for its legendary national health and nutrition survey (NHANES)—our health census—has been laid off. Now we are flying blind to nutrition and chronic disease status in the U.S.—is this supposed to help us be MAHA? www.statnews.com/2025/10/14/c...

Korol is a US citizen. Her family hasn’t heard from her since she was taken, public charges haven’t been released—what crime did she even commit? 2nd-Degree Woodwinding?—and there has been no explanation for her “renditioning” across state lines.

NHANES runs mobile clinics that travel the country measuring height, weight, & blood pressure while collecting blood and urine samples. These samples are our only national source for tracking everything from blood sugar to hormones, heavy metals, and more.

The entire operation has been eliminated.

Everyone across biomedicine should be very loud about this so this team's RIF status gets reversed. Nhanes has been key for tracking obesity & diabetes rates, identifying high blood lead levels in kids in the 70s, tracking progress on cholesterol lowering, guiding nutrient fortification programs etc

Eventually, we will have standards and codes that get implemented (that's key) for ventilation, filtration, UV to ensure a quantifiable risk level. Until then, personal filter (mask) is prudent esp in crowded spaces & healthcare.

11,551 cases have already been reported — just 104 short of the 2022 record. By contrast, only 9,725 cases were recorded in all of 2024.
