The wise man does not break into his fellow's speech. He is not in a rush to reply. He asks what is relevant and replies to the point. Of what he has not heard he says, "I have not heard," and he acknowledges what is true.

Just a reminder that most academics are not making oodles of money from their university press books. For some reason, people think I am making bank with my Illinois book. I am not rich by any means.

Some make money with trade press books, but that isn't all of us. Thank you.
Adieu!

It was an absolute joy to write about the Texas Archive of the Moving Image, a nonprofit that works tirelessly to preserve Texas' film history by digitizing tapes and film before they degrade. Their website is a treasure trove of cool state history: www.chron.com/culture/arti...

I have rounded up everything going on re: rainbow crosswalks in Texas. Galveston became the first city to remove theirs this week. Houston and Austin say they'll get rid of theirs, and San Antonio and Dallas are holding firm: www.chron.com/culture/arti...

It's a grind, but at least the legislature isn't coming back for a while! And we have some great candidates to back in state elections next year. ✊

The only thing more futile and demoralizing than teaching in Texas is the academic job market.

This is not enough, but it is a start. And we should celebrate that start and keep pushing for more.

But few Democrats vote in the other party's primary anyway, probably never enough to make a difference in the result. This move solves no problem.

Paxton only wants to muddy voting rights, imply there are misdeeds when there aren't any, and dilute the impact of Democratic voters even further.
bestonetx.bsky.social
Oddly, he also wants to preclude the possibility that a voter might be truly independent or might change their party between elections.

What defines a Democrat is someone who voted in the previous Democratic primary, which would bar them from deciding later to become a Republican.
bestonetx.bsky.social
I'm a loyal Democratic voter, but I've voted in the GOP primary many times when the Dem nominations weren't contested — as is my right. In a democracy it often makes sense to cast your vote in the elections that matter most.

Paxton wants to take away that freedom.

My paternal grandma’s family is from New Orleans, & part of the family is still there. Jews live everywhere. We take part in the cultures of the places we live, & transform them as well. We are part of the cultures where we live, not strangers or outsiders.

What’s weird about this meme is 1) seeing some of the comments conflate Judaism with Israel but also 2) the ignorance of very long standing Jewish communities in the South who have been making gumbo for a long time.

Anyone interested in the long history of Jews in the South (or who doubts its existence) should read Shari Rabin's terrific new book, "The Jewish South: An American History."
