I'm very pleased to share this work, which discovers a new material property of DNA—the bending friction— in essence how "sticky or viscous" DNA is as it bends & loops due to all the complex molecular interactions within itself & water

As well as the £20B to £30B that could be saved per year if BoE didn't pay interest on commercial bank reserves, which it does for no good reason!
An unnecessary banking subsidy whose time is up
Labour can save public money and enhance central bank independence with some tweaks to the BoE remit

Barghouti is still massively popular amongst Palestinians and a well-known supporter of a 2-state solution — this is exactly why he will not be released by Netanyahu.

European govs were serious about a 2-state solution they would put pressure on Israel and Trump for his release.

If Israel genuinely wanted peace they’d have allowed Barghouti to go free. The only challenge to the power base of Hamas remains locked up. #r4today #Gaza #Ceasefire #Hostages #MarwanBarghouti

Netanyahu refuses to release Marwan Barghouti, the most popular Palestinian leader—and the one most likely to bring about a two-state solution. Hamas refuses to disarm. The two enemies are united in opposition to a two-state solution. That makes lasting peace unlikely. wapo.st/3W5yhAx

— have lead to dire situation with Trump right now. Keynes' idea — where trade occurs through an international currency —would have alllowed national economic objectives & international trade objectives to be decoupled. As the book closes, we need a world currency but the path to it is not clear!

took advantage of it's economic might and the UK's weakness after 2 world wars to position the dollar as the effective world reserve currency. This financial hegemony is ultimately a poisoned chalice where the contradictions of being a world currency & having national economic aims —you could argue

Fascinating book about, possibly key moment in economic history of globe. Should Keynes' idea of world (clearing) currency won favour, when world was trying to design a new world financial system post WWII then the world could well be a very different place right now. Instead the US...

It is good news that there is agreement, but let's not think that Trumps motivation is peace (and justice), but an opportunity to exploit Gaza.

If Israel & US were serious about a stable peace they would release political prisoners like Marwan Barghouti

Hamas is demanding the release of a prominent Palestinian prisoner. This could be a red line for Israel | CNN
To Israel, he is one of the most high-profile terrorists. But few politicians have earned as much respect among Palestinians as Marwan Barghouti.

This is literally (Einstein's) definition of madness: doing the same thing but expecting different results. How did 14 years of Tory economic mismanagement not be burned deeply in the public psyche!!
bhavkhatri.bsky.social
There's nothing in what you say that explains why the UK or any other country can stop expiring parts to Israel, while continuing to export parts to other countries.

Can you provide the link to all the quotes you have given?
bhavkhatri.bsky.social
So many 10k of innocent deaths is ok then. I cannot believe there isn't a way to prevent export to Israel, while also maintaining the same defence capability elsewhere. Where there's a will there's a way. The way some people talk is like it's going against a law of physics— FFS!

Just to follow up a semi balanced article about Corbyn's nationalisation plans. Two keys things

1) upfront cost ignores that gov now owns the asset, which has an income

2) the Labour gov post war issued gov bonds to nationalised key industries

And I would add there is always a cost of profit
How much could Labour's nationalisation plan cost? - BBC News
The CBI says it would cost an initial £196bn - is that right?

It was trying to balance the books that lead to the mess we are in and yet Justin Webb was unable to challenge shadow Chancellor Mel Stride on this.

Time and again BBC are getting it wrong on economics and only allowing a very narrow view to be presented.

Pop quiz: which economic policy and which party inacted it which lead to 14 years of economic decline?

And why are we continuing with the same economic model with Labour and expecting different results (Einstein's definition of madness!)

I'm sorry to say I think you are way off base: 1) nothing Zack Polanski is proposing is economically outrageous & before neoliberalism took over Govs was mainstream. 2) because Labour are stuck in this mode of economics—constriend by arbtrary fiscal rules—they are doomed to fail & usher in Reform.

The interview just before the quote above is also prescient: "We've arranged this society based on science & technology in which nobody understands anything about science & technology: this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces".

Really interesting video by @tibees.bsky.social. Exam really about critical thinking & how Sagan thought this was key to unlock humanity's potential. Quote from his book "The Demon Haunted World" at around 15.30 shows tremendous prescience of the West's current descent to "superstition & darkness"🧪⚛️

Zack did well despite pretty hostile questioning—not sure what interview commenters here were watching! He could have answered the nationalisation question better: post WWII the UK was decimated yet we nationalised all key industries—how could we possibly have afforded that I wonder 🤦‍♂️

On one hand we shouldn't hold Jewish people account for Israel's actions—& we shouldn't & senseless, tragic murder of British Jews is antisemitic—yet a protest against Israel's continuing senseless & tragic murder of Palestinians is antisemitic??

I think Ben Houchen is a useful idiot!

Horrendous interview with @zackpolanski.bsky.social. Justin Webb — and his condescending tone — should be ashamed. No time left for any substantive discussion of Green economic policies with the majority spent with Justin trying to gotcha Zack over antisemitism.

Starmer's conference speech had a tone was a lot more left wing & progressive than I had expected—maybe he finally figured courting right wing is counterproductive. It didn't take long for ghoulish Starmer to come back with rowing back on asylum rights! #r4today

Like I allude to in the paper, whether it would have been possible to convince all govs globally to lockdown even for an 6 months and with sufficient restrictions, is another question. If a few counties didn't then eventually it would be imported into other countries.

BTW this work was done during pandemic & has distinction of being my most rejected paper (9 journals in total—epidemiologists did not want to touch it with a barge-pole, & one journal claimed they asked 22 reviewers & none would review it!). Very happy to hear from epidemiologists & their opinions.
