September 2025 was not a great month for job statistics in Manitoba.

But not a horrible disaster, either. There was some total employment growth since last September.

Just not enough to keep pace with labour force or population growth.

This is why it’s a better idea to look at larger samples when you look at job numbers. Year over year, ideally. September to September, for example.

As well, unemployment went up between April and September.

It was 41.5K in April. It was 48.9 in September.

That’s a rise of 7.4K.

Total employment growth lagged unemployment growth during the same period: It went up 3.5K.

The net gain over those five months was 500 full-time jobs.

The labour force, meanwhile, grew by 1,000 people.

Only have them ended up with full-time jobs.

The increase in full-time employment in September follows four consecutive months off decreases.

According to StatsCan, full-time employment in Manitoba was 614K in April.

It then dropped in May, June, July and August. It went back up in September, to 614.5K.

So the Manitoba government issued a press release today, declaring a big jump in full-time employment between August and September: 11,100 jobs.

That looks good … until you look at more than one month of data. 1/x

Watching the Newfoundland & Labrador election results come on, I’m reminded St. John’s is roughly the same distance from Winnipeg as it is from Dublin.

And Winnipeg is roughly the same distance from Puerto Vallarta as it is from St. John’s.
