“No.” Clive smiles again, a little wider this time. He feels Barnabas’ eyes burning on his face, but he ignores it. “Far from it. We didn’t know each other for very long, but you…”

How to explain it? How to give words to how Cid effortlessly burrowed under his skin and became part of him, merging with the very marrow in his bones?

“You were a dear friend to me,” Clive finally settles on. Woefully inadequate, but all that he can offer.

I realized it too late, Clive doesn’t say, his chest constricting with the ache of it. I realized it too late, and then all I could do was love you in death.
