Because the issue of lighting is coming up again with regard to the first film, here's some helpful behind-the-scenes talk about it from the Mechanic & World book I translated. I think people forget you can't see in a blackout. Throw in smoke/dust, and that amplifies things.

ガンプラの山を崩せ posted a thorough photo review of the HG Destiny Gundam Spec II [Final Battle Image Color]. Whilst a recolor of the existing kit plus railgun, the darker tones offer a slightly more moody look (see left) compared to the general retail version.
