“The common thread here is not just that Boone makes playoff mistakes. It’s that many of his mistakes are glaringly obvious the exact moment he makes them.”

Agree with every single word of this piece on Boone and the Yankees. Really well done.

The Aaron Boone Playoff Script Never Changes
The Yankees are going home losers, just as they have in every playoff appearance of Boone’s tenure. Will the franchise finally learn from its failure?

100% agree. It is refreshing to see a writer point this out, while most big name columnists are unwilling to because cashman and boon serve as valuable sources at the trade deadline.

“With your patient and rigorous work, you can act as a barrier against those who, through the ancient art of lying, seek to create divisions in order to rule by dividing,” he said. “You can also be a bulwark of civility against the quicksand of approximation and post-truth.”
I also think they have a tremendous debt load.
He took them to the WS after 7 years at the helm of a team with the highest or near highest payroll in baseball. They embarrassed themselves in front of the world with poor fundamental play. He’s a great guy, but this is a sport, and a franchise, about results, and the results have been meh.
I agree. Also, though, the Yankees finished with a run differential more than double the Blue Jays and ended up with the same record. That’s because, among other things, they were terrible in close games and fundamentally poor, and a lot of that is on management. It’s been 8 years with these two.
He is the longest serving GM - he’s been there for 28 years!!! He inherited a team that went in to win 3 titles, and has won one since, despite having a top three payroll in each of those years.
It’s the most expensive franchise to be a fan of. It is just so insulting.
I just don’t think this team wins a championship with cashman and Boone at the helm.
This team will never win a championship with those two at the helm, and I’m not sure Hal cares.
What is maddening is to think about all the top tier shortstops we passed on to protect this untouchable asset.
He was just extended for another 10 years.
Brian cashman has been the general manager for 27 years!!! He inherited a team in 98 that went on to win 3 championships. Built 1 after that despite having a top three payroll for 25 years. He has to go.
Every time we say that they add another year to his contract.
It is so insulting to the fans. They will issue a statement about how losing is unacceptable, do an audit with an official-sounding firm and extend cashman and Boone for another 10 years
It also is another example of trump’s central belief: I do it, so everyone must do it.

I wrote about Ezra Klein, Ta-Nehisi Coates, the struggle to define the boundaries of what is acceptable in America – and why democratic citizens have an obligation to hold the line on what we consider beyond the pale.

Some thoughts from my new piece:

This is such an excellent analysis of that discussion and puts into words the unsettled feeling I had listening to it. Subscribed to your site!!
Totally. This year, though, they led the AL in runs scored and run differential. Their run differential was almost 100 runs greater than the Jays, and they finished tied with them! It seems like that discrepancy has a lot to do with game management IMHO.
They would have to construct a roster overflowing with talent to overcome the basic mistakes Boone makes nightly. He brings in a rusty 5th starter with the heart of the order coming up when the situation needed to be locked down. The Yankees scored 7 runs and lost!
The Yankees need to build an absolute juggernaut of talent to overcome the boneheaded moves Boone makes.
What is so frustrating is that, with runners on and Vladdy coming up, Boone brings in a fifth starter who hasn’t pitched in over a week. Bring in a high leverage reliever, stop the bleeding, then reset. He basically just gave up.
And if the Yankees had won just one more game over them (or anyone else for that matter) they might not be in this situation
