Can we talk about how I consider Sayonara Hitori to be my First Official Taemin stage because it was the first stage I saw him perform in real time (albeit through a screen) during SuperM’s tour

And it was my first official Taemin concert stage since I missed the opening.

any time you ask why something is aggressively sexual or otherwise vulgar, crude, or adult the answer is probably "because this exists as a rebellion against previous censorship, or as a celebration of their new freedom of expression within their medium and genre"

if your lack of understanding isnt driving you to understand better, in what ways you can, then youre the one doing something wrong, its not the fault of the language or culture.
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
last post but

I will always love and respect anything thats not natively in English, I'm fully aware theres context and wording I'll likely never understand fully. And thats actually beautiful and makes me treasure the understanding I do get. it makes me want to learn languages. so.
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
also just

any translation is gonna lose a bit of the og context because. duh. this is not a new or unique thing.

and people who have this complaint are revealing how little they read/engage with media in general
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
also lets be clear

Americans are also the ones that seem to mischaracterize Sylus the most and that mischaracterization is one reason hes popular

but theyre the first to lecture u about not understanding the CN context/how EN "watered him down"

go read wattpad mafia fic & get away from my dragon
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
anyway, when someones ignorant of a thing, like genuinely ignorant, not maliciously

educate them and give them grace for not knowing because why would they know a specific cultural thing??

dont be a weirdo that shames people for not knowing things. Be the reason they seek out an answer.
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
(ex because I've engaged with a lot of eastern storytelling, I know some of the comments about a "scent" MC makes sometimes are referencing Qi, not a literal scent. its cultural context and yes it adds to the storytelling. it doesnt make you dumb if you DONT know it though)
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
translations that include translations of cultural context are actually a sign of GOOD translations, not bad

but people dont wanna talk about it because then they'd have nothing to bitch about and they'd have to admit that they cant read context unless its spelled out for them....
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
anyway. I love the beauty of the CN and KR specifically. The VAs are amazing and this game has been such a wonderful way to learn about Chinese culture.

I dont care that I'll never understand like a native. thats ok. I think the story and characters are beautiful regardless.
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
if the story only makes sense or can be understood in its native language, its a shit story. because its not speaking to a UNIVERSAL HUMAN EXPERIENCE which means its just plain poorly written

TLDR
theres a DIFFERENCE between "you need context" and "you couldnt possibly understand"
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
anyway, I've never encountered this argument in ANY other non english thing. I watch kdramas. A native speakers will be quick to inform you of context, especially for historical dramas

but I've never been told I simply "wont understand if its translated" until LADS fandom. its weird & gross
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
and the irony of lecturing not native speakers not on context or simply saying how beautiful the wording in Chinese is but saying SPECIFICALLY that you cant understand it unless youre reading the direct CN?

youre actually missing a core component of the story yourself.
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
thats part of why stories are magical. the reader is JUST as much a participant as the teller is.
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
I dont actually lose any of the beauty because I dont just read whats in front of me and move on. Something as simple as a meadow is beautiful no matter how plainly its described in english because I, the reader, give it beauty in my head.
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
words are beautiful because even across cultures, where the words are different and even concepts are different, in the end they still speak to emotions all humans experience. dont talk down to me by telling me, a lover of words and stories, i cant POSSIBLY understand unless I'm Chinese. FUCK OFF
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
like. the wording is prettier/more poetic but I can understand from it being written in english. I dont lose any of Sylus' brutality/softness/duality, I dont lose the context with Caleb or Zayne, because its mostly CULTURAL
bluepearlmoon.bsky.social
thanks, actually. I've been reading and writing my whole life and I can understand the beauty of words in my language while ALSO understanding that its worded and contextually different in the original language while LEARNING WHAT I CAN AND STILL SEEING BEAUTY
