Suggested Halloween reading... This story about the "Mad Doctor of No-Name Key," in our anthology ATOMIC WEREWOLVES AND MAN-EATING PLANTS: WHEN MEN’S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES GOT WEIRD (amzn.to/3Q8R3U5), is based on a real life wacko who lived in Key West. Available via Amazon OR MensPulpMags.com.

Think you're having a bad day? The guy tied to the stake probably had it worse, in this story from the men's adventure magazine REAL, April 1953. Artwork by the great Rafael DeSoto. (Scan via the Men's Adventure Magazines & Books Facebook Group-> bit.ly/mensadventureFB.)

I saved this Green Orchid Bee who accidentally fell into our pool and put him on a nearby table, where he spent about 3 minutes drying himself off — then flew away. They sure are beautiful little creatures. Their Latin scientific name is Euglossa dilemma.

I was 12 years old when the movie TARAS BULBA came out in 1962. I loved it and remember being awed when Yul Brynner, as Taras, cuts off the hand of a snide Polish officer. Today, at age 75, I rewatched it and felt the same love and awe. I’m still a teenager in my mind.

The illustration for the 'Stumpy' Jim story shown above was done by Sydney Shores. Syd is best known for his comic book artwork but he also did a lot of cover and interior art for men's adventure magazines. You can see more examples in the post on my blog at the following link -> bit.ly/3L48aaE
Legendary comics artist Syd Shores also did some wild men’s “sweat magazine” covers… - The Men's Adventure Magazines Blog
Most people who are familiar with artist Sydney “Syd” Shores (1913-1973) think of him as a comic book artist. And, indeed, he was one of the greatest comic book artists…

Before there was Freddie Kruger, there was 'Stumpy' Jim Carwick, who had spikes where his fingers used to be. In this story from MAN'S TRUE DANGER, Oct. 1963, he uses them to get revenge on the punks who cut them off. (Scan via the Men's Adventure Magazines Facebook Group -> bit.ly/mensadventureFB.)

New on Joe Kenney's great "Glorious Trash" blog, a review of a horror novel I was unaware of: CANDLEMAS EVE by Jeffrey Sackett (Bantam Books, 1988). Joe notes that one of the characters is "a hot Satanic pulp horror chick." Sounds like a fun read to me. ;-) Here's a link to the post...
