I was 12 years old when the movie TARAS BULBA came out in 1962. I loved it and remember being awed when Yul Brynner, as Taras, cuts off the hand of a snide Polish officer. Today, at age 75, I rewatched it and felt the same love and awe. I’m still a teenager in my mind.

The illustration for the 'Stumpy' Jim story shown above was done by Sydney Shores. Syd is best known for his comic book artwork but he also did a lot of cover and interior art for men's adventure magazines. You can see more examples in the post on my blog at the following link -> bit.ly/3L48aaE
Legendary comics artist Syd Shores also did some wild men’s “sweat magazine” covers… - The Men's Adventure Magazines Blog
Most people who are familiar with artist Sydney “Syd” Shores (1913-1973) think of him as a comic book artist. And, indeed, he was one of the greatest comic book artists…

Before there was Freddie Kruger, there was 'Stumpy' Jim Carwick, who had spikes where his fingers used to be. In this story from MAN'S TRUE DANGER, Oct. 1963, he uses them to get revenge on the punks who cut them off. (Scan via the Men's Adventure Magazines Facebook Group -> bit.ly/mensadventureFB.)

New on Joe Kenney's great "Glorious Trash" blog, a review of a horror novel I was unaware of: CANDLEMAS EVE by Jeffrey Sackett (Bantam Books, 1988). Joe notes that one of the characters is "a hot Satanic pulp horror chick." Sounds like a fun read to me. ;-) Here's a link to the post...

"Gator Ground" by Robert Edmond Alter, illustrated by Doug Allen, is one of my favorite stories in issue #9 of THE MEN'S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY, the magazine I co-edit with Bill Cunningham. MAQ #9 (amzn.to/49ygMye) features classic croc and gator attack stories from vintage men's adventure magazines.

Beginning a process that I have long considered, which is creating a small press. For now, this is a placeholder. But look for more details soon. We will be seeking offbeat fiction and literary mystery, with a sweet spot for Southern Gothic. @brownhoundpress.bsky.social

I love that one. And Marvin. And Matheson.

Richard Matheson is best known for novels, like I AM LEGEND, and his TWILIGHT ZONE scripts. But he also wrote stories for men's adventure magazines, like this Western story in MEN, July 1958, illustrated by Stan Borack. It’s the shadow of my cat in the door of our bathroom. My real cat was standing on a cat perch in the bathroom window. The sun was casting his shadow on the door. I made the shadow morph into a cat using an AI app called Photo Revive. I dislike most uses of AI, but it can be used for fun stuff.
