Since I'm new to bluesky - I'm working on ARMED DECOBOT, a game where throw dudes into dudes, my favorite thing in gaming. You also shoot & punch dudes, which are my other favorite things in gaming. It's a top down shmup/beat em up hybrid

You don't get it dude despite being best sellers, no one respects JRPG gameplay they only care about the vibes!!! :(

*proceeds to defend grinding, unbalanced builds that completely tear the games apart & combat systems so basic that even action games require more strategy*

BO-BO-BONU-BO-BONUSSS

You know whether someone's into arcade games or not based on their reaction to Catherine's EDGE EDGE NEW RECORD NEW RECORD EDGE spam

I fuckin love arcade sound design
boghogstg.bsky.social
I don't see it, the devs from everything I've seen just wanna make a bmup roguelite hybrid. It's the response from reviewers & players that's driving me up the wall, not the game itself
boghogstg.bsky.social
Yup, you train your brain to just do that, so it becomes hard to turn it off and just enjoy the game. Same reason I'm really critical all the time
boghogstg.bsky.social
Gotta keep it that way, shit sucks
boghogstg.bsky.social
Actually wtf am I talking about, it abso-fucking-lutely IS making it worse in a very real immediate sense via FOMO. If you're learning a game slower you will quite literally not be able to participate in the online convo when its at its most active, or even in the convo with ur friend group
boghogstg.bsky.social
It's hard to frame frustration & stress in a way that makes them pleasant if you feel like the act of learning games is in itself a contest and that you're failing if you learn slower. I wonder if soc media and this constant hyper-awareness of others' play habits makes it worse
boghogstg.bsky.social
I think it's actually more self contained of a problem. It just comes back to the fact that people don't view the more negative emotions of play as valuable but rather as an obstacle, taking on a weird utilitarian view of playing games. Struggle means you're consuming less efficiently
boghogstg.bsky.social
Oh I meant diff player's time in the same game. But yeah <10 hours for a 1cc to me is always a huge letdown, feels like I just got started
boghogstg.bsky.social
Even if he leaves my head he'll never leave my heart ❤️

But no Mark's on the human side as far as shmup players go
boghogstg.bsky.social
When your homie gets a 1cc that took you 100+ hours in 20 remember that even if they don't show it, they are hurting real bad too
boghogstg.bsky.social
People talk about how unskilled/untalented players have a bad time in games but they never talk about the talented, experienced human-machine motherfuckers who need to try extra hard to find the same emotional rush as us normal players 😔
boghogstg.bsky.social
Oh did they? I gotta check that out, been a while
boghogstg.bsky.social
Only synergies I want is enemy/level synergies 😎
boghogstg.bsky.social
Itd be funny if "roguelite mechanics" JUST means the 3 upgrades screen
boghogstg.bsky.social
WAIT WHAT DID THEY ADD SYNERGIES?
boghogstg.bsky.social
Thats true, and honestly the lines get really blurry in arcade games. Rolling Thunder's mechanics/enemies/levels are so simple that Rolling Bird randomizing them makes the game feel like an arcade puzzle game like Tetris/Soldam more than a roguelike when playing
boghogstg.bsky.social
That's the take I hear from basically every beat em up fan I talk to. Where they like the randomized layouts and all but hate the randomized movesets. Absolum's core combat isn't my thing but I felt exactly like that about SOR4's survival mode & wished it was just rng layouts with no upgrades at all
boghogstg.bsky.social
This shit sucks on both ends - roguelite RPG loving devs view synergies & procgen as a package deal and make action games about sorting through numbers, and arcade devs view them as a package deal so the niche of "procgen game without RPG elements" is basically non existent
boghogstg.bsky.social
The takes on Absolum are radicalizing me. I really think more arcade devs need to adapt procgen without synergies because if they don't provide an alternative to synergy games, that shit will infect everything and erode the games. Shoutouts to Rolling Bird for not including ANY of that
boghogstg.bsky.social
It's a dual problem where people/games get called freaky for literally nothing, but then genuinely niche and extreme tastes also get subtly ostracized
boghogstg.bsky.social
I think as a rule you'll find that the more people show contempt to a style of game on a fundamental level, the more they hate or are indifferent to the core mechanics/interactions, the more they will want progression because those things mask the problems
boghogstg.bsky.social
Things have not changed much at all sinc ethe 2000s/2010s when every beat em up had to justify its existence with RPG elements. The only difference is that the roguelike trend gave devs a somewhat less intrusive way of bloating the games
