You too! Beautiful flowers!!

Of course! You’ve just reminded me of what crowd pullers the Victorian narrative paintings were. It makes sense now - an era where people were far more savvy about symbolic references in paintings & images - thank you 😊

I read the book ‘Steeple Chasing’ by Peter Ross - seem to recall that quite a few of the pre-reformation, roof angels still survive in East Anglia.

Same but what attracts me to them is that, some of them are so busy, they’re like those magic eye puzzles - there’s obviously something there to decipher but we’re so temporally removed now and many of us with so little biblical knowledge it’s difficult to work out what they’re trying to convey.

That is interesting & gives some context. It seems implies that they were post reformation & carved in 1868 - still beautiful tho’.

Agree! The old phrase; less is more. The wildlife ones are beautiful.

I wonder how old it is? Some pre-reformation angels in the roof survived; either because they escaped notice at that height or, were too high up to reach and trash when the churches were sacked of their Catholic icons & symbols.

This week from the camera - old

Old Kirk & Kirkyard
Old window & small flaky door
Good luck with the door!
Part of an old waterwheel
at a wool mill.

Sony/Canon lens 2025
Old cemetery with graves in the fore and middle ground. Part of an old church towards the rear of the image with a stepped and slated roof and a cross at the top. An arched window in the wall. Parts of houses can be seen in the background. A sloping path and sloping house wall in white harling. An old window is above a small door. The door has been painted brown but the paint is flaking off badly. A small horseshoe is nailed to the door with the open end of the shoe at the top. An old arched doorway and stairs inset leading to a double pale green door. The wall above is grey with three plaques in a line above. The oldest shows it was dedicated to a convener - John Murray - for his charitable work. His initials ‘I M’ and crest of the guild of cordiners above in red and gold dated 1710. Below is another plaque in gold lettering that says it was rebuilt in 1787 by the ‘incorporation of shoemakers’ and below that, the building was restored in 1975. Part of a waterwheel with water flowing down against an old stone wall.

Once called the "Witches' Stone", the symbols on this boulder near Tormain Hill in Edinburgh were carved over 2,000 years ago 🧙‍♀️

Discover this area's rich prehistoric landscape by joining an excavation close to the site from 26 July (no experience required): www.digitscotland.com/events/the-t...
