That said, I apologize for suggesting you’re a right winger. The “about” section of your website makes it sound like the ArlNow/AlxNow arrangement is a more local version of a Bezos/WaPo or Sinclair/WJLA situation. Glad to be wrong.

Well then, you got this one wrong, IMO—this doesnt come remotely close to crossing a line into speech not protected by the 1A. As a publisher, I’m sure you also know that the lawfulness of anti-MAGA speech is a matter of considerable public interest right now. It’s important to get the law right.

I didn’t call you right wing, Ryan, nor did I call you worthless. You know your company’s ideological leanings. And the biggest problem here is the headline, which I imagine you did not write—it’s inaccurate, feeds into a right wing trope & unfortunately it’s all most people will see/internalize.

That’s the MAGA cult in a nutshell, tho. Rights do not exist in their world. Compassion and even MOURNING do not exist in their world, unless the form of mourning aligns with their ideology. It is a relentless process of dehumanization & othering, aimed at justifying harm.

All people—even fundamentally horrible people—have intrinsic human dignity. The fact that it’s not enough to ground my feelings about tragedy in a person’s inherent worth—that I must also celebrate his work & can be punished if I dont—suggests these beliefs about dignity are a 1-way street.

Love ya, Sally (seriously, you’re my favorite sportswriter by far), but you missed the mark here. Charlie Kirk’s ideology was every bit as bad as people say. And the fact that he expressed it with an “aww shucks” smile while claiming to embrace dialogue is precisely why it was so harmful.
