Watched The Fog (1980) tonight, and on this viewing it jumped out at me to wonder if one the origins of this project was Carpenter's disgust with all the Bicentennial hoopla and wanting to make something explicitly about how America's historical charm is founded on historical violence.

Alice, Sweet Alice (1976) is the greatest American synergy with giallo I have ever seen, a near-miraculous texture of 16mm brutality and slow burning entropic rage. A self-made tomb of urban Catholic abuses and cyclical mania, the ravenous ouroboros of the Holier Than Thou and the lives they pulp.

Gary Sherman’s Dead and Buried (1981) is an absolutely perfect little horror movie. Sort’ve a sleepy Re-Animator in Murder She Wrote’s Cabot Cove, a sweet spot between Messiah of Evil and The Fog just oozing with rural seaside evil and mood to fucking spare. Small town apocalypse at its best!
