I envisaged I’d have a job ahead of me the following morning, but that is a problem for future Séamas, who I’ve always considered something of a bore.

We are standing at the threshold and my daughter is distraught. Four weeks into her new nursery and she’s finding the trip there harder every day. This, despite the fact that said nursery is inside the school her brother attends, a school so close to our house that if I stand in our living room, I’m closer to my kids than I am to our kitchen sink. It’s not merely close but directly opposite. In fact, our doors line up so neatly that, were there ice on the roads, I could skim her there successfully with a single well-placed shove.

And, still, each time I depart, she wails like a wartime evacuee, appalled at being on her own. She has developed, as her brother did before her, a strain of homesickness so profound that it kicks in over distances barely measurable by science.

In his case, I cited my own rural upbringing, the hour-long trip from school each day, utilising several buses, with a two-mile walk at its terminus. When this failed to impress upon him the concept of relative hardships, I pointed to our bedroom window and told him we’d be right there. Sadly, he took this so literally that any time he looked up at our window and didn’t see us, he was devastated, since he had taken those warm words as a commitment to surrender all other responsibilities and stand at the window of our bedroom, engaged in the legally inadvisable practice of staring into a primary school for eight hours each day.

Also: I like & respect Fr. Larry A LOT, and his words are rightfully being celebrated.

But let’s not lose sight of the leadership of the Coalition for Spiritual & Public Leadership, who organized this action and continue to organize prayerful protest & action formed by liberation theology.

WHAT WE DO

We bring together organizations, congregations, universities, parishes, and other grassroots organizations in Chicago & the western suburbs, particularly Maywood, Melrose Park, and Proviso Township, to build power to create thriving communities.

We equip people of faith with skills to build systems that advance racial, economic, social, and environmental justice through direct action.

We help people encounter the historical Jesus, a radical disruptor of the status quo. This faith formation, rooted in liberation theology, better equips community leaders to build a movement that confronts power through non-violent resistance.

Together we create a strong, sustainable, member-led organization. We gather the people and money needed to win the goals of our communities.

The Coalition for Spiritual & Public Leadership, who organized this Eucharistic procession, also organized a People’s Mass for Justice + Peace at Broadview in September. They form Christians to act for social justice for using the spirituality of liberation theology. www.csplaction.org

I met Fr. Dowling in December, in connection with the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Pastoral Migratoria annual Posada in Solidarity with Immigrants. (Las Posadas is a devotional from Latin America that walks in the steps of the Holy Family seeking—and being denied—shelter as Mary’s labor approaches.)

Fr. Larry Dowling was the pastor of St. Agatha, a Black parish in North Lawndale (a Black neighborhood MLK lived in to protest housing discrimination.) Fr. Dowling retired in June 2024. After a 6-month sabbatical, inc travel to West Africa, he has been active in prayerful protest for immigrants.

My cat MUST be near me when I sit on the couch. If I’m elsewhere at home, he’s happy to be near me or he’s happy to do his own thing—but the minute I sit on the couch, no matter where he is, he sighs dramatically and marches over, as though I have FORCED him to interrupt his window nap by sitting.
