“If politicians and professionals do not listen to the poor democracy atrophies, turns into a slogan, a formality; it loses its representative character and becomes disembodied, since it leaves out the people in their daily struggle for dignity, in the building of their future.” - Pope in Dilexi te

“Christian love breaks down every barrier, brings close those who were distant, unites strangers, and reconciles enemies. It spans chasms that are humanly impossible to bridge, and it penetrates to the most hidden crevices of society.” - Pope Leo in Dilexi te

Leo punctuates Francis’ pontificate and builds on his own themes regarding the poor. The document serves as a sign of continuity between Francis and Leo, and is a clear mandate to those who would treat the poor as if they don’t exist. You cannot call yourself self a Christian and cast away the poor.

“The many forms of indifference we see all around us are in fact signs of an approach to life that is spreading in various and subtle ways…A society that seeks prosperity but turns its back on suffering. May we not sink to such depths!” - Pope Leo in Dilexi te

“We must continue, then, to denounce the ‘dictatorship of an economy that kills,’ and to recognize that while the earnings of a minority are growing exponentially, so too is the gap separating the majority from the prosperity enjoyed by those happy few.” - Pope Leo in Dilexi te

Pope Leo in Dilexi te: Christians who “dismiss or ridicule charitable works, as if they were an obsession on the part of a few and not the burning heart of the Church’s mission, convinces me of the need to go back and re-read the Gospel, lest we risk replacing it with the wisdom of this world.”
