Tim Wakefield in 1995 was released by the Pirates and picked up by the Redsox. In his first 17 starts he went 14-1, with a 1.65 ERA. Finished the year at 16-8, leading them to a division title. He is 2nd in Sox history in games pitched with 590, pitching out of the bullpen and as a starter. RIP.

50 years ago today Bill Lee clowns around in the clubhouse after the Red Sox take Game 1 of the World Series. Lee sucks his thumb and wears a beanie as he announces he will be Pitching game 2 the next day. He ends up going 8 innings, giving up 5 hits and 2 runs, in a 3-2 loss to the Reds.

Jeff Sellers was the Red Sox 8th round draft pick in 1982. He pitched parts of 4 seasons for the Red Sox from 1985-88. In 61 Games, 51 Starts he was 13-22 with a 4.97 ERA. In December 1988 he was traded along with Todd Benzinger and Luis Vasquez to the Reds for Nick Esasky and Rob Murphy.

On this date in 1999 the Red Sox beat the Indians 12-8, to advance to the ALCS. Pedro Martinez pitched 6 no hit relief innings for the win. While the offense was led by Troy O’Leary who was 2-4 with 2 HR’s, he hit a Grand Slam in the 3rd inning and a 3 run HR in the 7th inning to break the 8-8 tie.

The Red Sox selected Gary Waslewski from the Pirates in the November 1964 Minor League Draft. He pitched for the Red Sox in 1967 & 68, appearing in 46 Games, 19 Starts and going 6-9 with a 3.54 ERA and 2 Saves. In December 1968 he was traded to the Cardinals for Dick Schofield.

On this date in 1975 the Red Sox defeated the Reds 6-0 in Game 1 of the WS, as Luis Tiant pitched a CG 5 Hit Shutout. He also went 1-3 and scored a run,with an adventurous time around the bases, it ended with him scoring from 3rd on a base hit, missing the plate and having to go back to tag it.

On this date in 1967 the Red Sox defeated the Cardinals 8-4, to tie up the World Series 3 games apiece. Shortstop Rico Petrocelli led the Offense going 2-3 with 2 HR’s. That season a 24 yr old Petrocelli hit .259, with 17 HR’s, a .750 OPS and a 4.1 WAR, making his 1st AS Game.

Happy 66th Birthday to 1st Baseman Pat Dodson, who the Red Sox drafted in the 6th round of the 1980 draft. He played 9 years in the Sox organization and parts of 3 seasons with Boston, hitting 118 HR’s in the Minors. With Boston in 52 Games he hit .202, with 4 HR’s and a .738 OPS.

Happy 81st Birthday to Mike Fiore, who the Red Sox acquired from the Royals in May 1970. He spent 2 seasons with the Sox, hitting .161, with 1 HR and a .491 OPS. They traded him to the Cardinals in March 1972.
A non Red Sox tidbit, he hit the 1st HR in the Kansas City Royals history.

On this date in 1999, with the score tied 8-8 in the bottom of the 4th, Pedro Martinez with an ailing arm was called upon to stop the bleeding, he went on to have one of the greatest performances in Postseason history, No-Hitting the Indians for 6 innings, as the Sox won 12-8 to move on to the ALCS.

Pete Runnels was acquired by the Red Sox from the Washington Senators in January 1958. He played for the Sox from 1958-62, winning the Batting Title in 1960 & 62. overall with the Sox he hit .320, with 29 HR’s, a .835 OPS a 20.3 WAR, and was a 3x AS. His .320 Average is 5th in Sox history.

Steve Crawford was signed by the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent in May 1978. He pitched for the Sox in parts of 7 seasons, from 1980-87. In 1985 he was 6-5, with a 3.76 ERA and 12 Saves. Overall in 277 Games, he was 19-16, with a 4.15 ERA and 17 Saves.
