Tim Wakefield in 1995 was released by the Pirates and picked up by the Redsox. In his first 17 starts he went 14-1, with a 1.65 ERA. Finished the year at 16-8, leading them to a division title. He is 2nd in Sox history in games pitched with 590, pitching out of the bullpen and as a starter. RIP.

On this date in 1967 the Red Sox defeated the Cardinals 8-4, to tie up the World Series 3 games apiece. Shortstop Rico Petrocelli led the Offense going 2-3 with 2 HR’s. That season a 24 yr old Petrocelli hit .259, with 17 HR’s, a .750 OPS and a 4.1 WAR, making his 1st AS Game.

Happy 66th Birthday to 1st Baseman Pat Dodson, who the Red Sox drafted in the 6th round of the 1980 draft. He played 9 years in the Sox organization and parts of 3 seasons with Boston, hitting 118 HR’s in the Minors. With Boston in 52 Games he hit .202, with 4 HR’s and a .738 OPS.

Happy 81st Birthday to Mike Fiore, who the Red Sox acquired from the Royals in May 1970. He spent 2 seasons with the Sox, hitting .161, with 1 HR and a .491 OPS. They traded him to the Cardinals in March 1972.
A non Red Sox tidbit, he hit the 1st HR in the Kansas City Royals history.

On this date in 1999, with the score tied 8-8 in the bottom of the 4th, Pedro Martinez with an ailing arm was called upon to stop the bleeding, he went on to have one of the greatest performances in Postseason history, No-Hitting the Indians for 6 innings, as the Sox won 12-8 to move on to the ALCS.

Jim Rice in January 1979 signing a 7 year 5.4 million dollar record breaking American League contract at a press conference at Fenway. Jim Rice from the years 1977-79 averaged 207 hits, 41 HR’s, 128 RBI’s and a .320 Batting Average per season.

Pete Runnels was acquired by the Red Sox from the Washington Senators in January 1958. He played for the Sox from 1958-62, winning the Batting Title in 1960 & 62. overall with the Sox he hit .320, with 29 HR’s, a .835 OPS a 20.3 WAR, and was a 3x AS. His .320 Average is 5th in Sox history.

Steve Crawford was signed by the Red Sox as a non-drafted free agent in May 1978. He pitched for the Sox in parts of 7 seasons, from 1980-87. In 1985 he was 6-5, with a 3.76 ERA and 12 Saves. Overall in 277 Games, he was 19-16, with a 4.15 ERA and 17 Saves.

On this date in 1970 the Red Sox traded Tony Conigliaro to the Angels in a 6 player trade, after he hit .266 with 36 HR’s and 116 RBI’s in 1970. He retired after 1 rough season with the Angels as his eyesight was deteriorating from the 1967 beaning. He did make a brief comeback with the Sox in 1975.

Dom DiMaggio who looks like he’s 15 years old in the photo, next to 2 of the greatest hitters who ever lived Jimmie Foxx and Ted Williams. Dimaggio was a solid hitter in his own right, with a lifetime .298 average, .383 OBP, .802 OPS and 33.6 WAR. He was a 7x AS.

Sadly on this date in 2015 Gary Hancock died at the age of 61. He was the Red Sox 1st rd pick in the Jan 1976 draft and played parts of 4 seasons for the Sox, hitting 228, with 4 HR’s and a .569 OPS. In Dec 1982 he was traded to the A’s along with Carney Lansford for Tony Armas and Jeff Newman.

On this date in 1999 the Red Sox tied up the ALDS 2-2 beating the Indians 23-7 and establishing a MLB record for most runs and biggest margin of victory in a postseason game. John Valentin was 4-5 with 2 HR’s and 7 RBI’s to pace the offense. That season Valentin hit .253, with 12 HR’s and a .713 OPS

On this date in 2017 John Farrell was fired as Manager of the Red Sox. He managed the Sox from 2013-17 finishing with a 432-378 record. He won the WS in 2013, finished in last place in 2014 and 15, then won the division in 2016 and 17, but with quick exits from the postseason.

Don Schwall was signed by the Red Sox as an Amatuer Free Agent in 1957. in 1961 his Rookie season with Boston he was 15-7 with a 3.22 ERA and won ROY, his teammate and roommate Carl Yastrzemski did not receive any votes. The following year he struggled and was traded to Pittsburgh for Dick Stuart.

On this date in 2010 Luis Tiant, along with Fernando Valenzuela, Edgar Martinez, Dennis Martinez and 7 other players are elected into the Latin American Baseball HOF. Tiant in his time with the Red Sox was 122-81 with a 3.36 ERA and a 35.9 WAR. Overall he was 229-172 with a 3.30 ERA and a 65.7 WAR.

Happy 46th Birthday to Submarine style Pitcher Brad Ziegler, who the Red Sox acquired from Arizona for 2 Minor Leaguers in July 2016. He pitched in 33 games for the Sox, going 2-4 with a 1.52 ERA and 4 Saves. He left as a Free Agent following the season.
