Tim Wakefield in 1995 was released by the Pirates and picked up by the Redsox. In his first 17 starts he went 14-1, with a 1.65 ERA. Finished the year at 16-8, leading them to a division title. He is 2nd in Sox history in games pitched with 590, pitching out of the bullpen and as a starter. RIP.

On this date in 2014 the Red Sox agreed to a 4 yr $88 Million Dollar contract with Free Agent Hanley Ramírez. He played 3+ yrs with the Sox before they Designated him for Assignment on May 25, 2018. He hit .260 with 78 HR’s, 255 RBI’s and a .776 OPS.

Tony Conigliaro’s 1964 Topps Rookie Card. That season at 19 yrs old in 111 Games he hit .290 with 24 HR’s, and a .883 OPS. In 1965 he hit 32 HR’s becoming the youngest HR champ in AL History. In 1967 he hit his 100th HR at the age of 22 becoming the youngest AL player to reach that milestone.

On this date in 1975 Fred Lynn of the Red Sox becomes the 1st Rookie in MLB history to win MVP. For the year he led the AL in Runs 103, Doubles 47, Slugging % .566 and OPS .967, while hitting .331, with 21 HR’s, 105 RBI’s and a 7.4 WAR.

On this date in 1958 Jackie Jensen of the Red Sox wins the AL MVP. He hit .286 with 35 HR’s, 122 RBI’s, a .931 OPS and a 4.9 WAR. In 7 seasons with the Sox he hit .282, with 170 HR’s, 733 RBI’s, a .852 OPS and a 22.4 WAR. He was a 2x AS, won 1 GG and finished top 10 in the MVP 3x for the Sox.

Happy 27th Birthday to Carlos Narvaez, who the Red Sox acquired from the Yankees for Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz in December 2024. In 2025 he appeared in 118 Games hitting.241 with 15 HR’s, a .726 OPS and a 2.6 WAR. He finished 6th for ROY and was a GG finalist.

Xander Bogaerts in 2013 at the age of 20 hit .297, with 15 HR’s and a .865 OPS between Portland and Pawtucket. Considered one of the top prospects in Baseball, he was called up to the Red Sox on Aug 20th, in 18 Games he hit .250 with 1 HR. In the Postseason in 12 Games he hit .296 with a .893 OPS.

On this date in 2014 the Red Sox signed Pablo Sandoval to a 5 yr $90 million dollar contract, one of the worst Free Agent signings in MLB History. In 2+ yrs with the Sox he appeared in 161 Games, hitting.237, with 14 HR’s, a .646 OPS and a -1.6 WAR. He was released in July 2017.

On this date in 1949 Ted Williams wins his 2nd MVP in a landslide over Phil Rizzuto and Joe Page of the Yankees. Williams just missed his 3rd Triple Crown as his batting average fell .0002 below that of George Kell. For the season he hit .343, with 43 HR’s, 159 RBI’s, a 1.141 OPS and a 9.0 WAR.

On this date in 2002 Theo Epstein was named General Manager of the Red Sox, at the time the 28 yr old Epstein becomes the youngest GM in MLB History. A life long Red Sox fan who grew up about a mile from Fenway Park, he led the Sox to the postseason 6x, the ALCS 4X and won 2 WS Titles in 9 yrs.

Happy 68th Birthday to Chico Walker who was the Red Sox 22nd round draft pick in 1976. Walker played a total of 32 Games for the Sox from 1980-1984 hitting .247, with 1 HR and a .641 OPS. After he left Boston he played 7 more seasons, mainly with the Cubs and Mets.
