Tim Wakefield in 1995 was released by the Pirates and picked up by the Redsox. In his first 17 starts he went 14-1, with a 1.65 ERA. Finished the year at 16-8, leading them to a division title. He is 2nd in Sox history in games pitched with 590, pitching out of the bullpen and as a starter. RIP.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Catcher John Marzano who passed away at the age of 45 in 2008. He was selected by the Red Sox in the 1st round of the 1984 draft and went on to play 6 seasons with the Sox, 1987-92. He played in 169 Games hitting .232, with 6 HR’s and a .599 OPS.

Carl Yastrzemski’s 1968 Topps Baseball Card. That season the year of the Pitcher, Yaz led the AL in Walks 119, Average .301, OBP .426, OPS .922, OPS+ 171 and WAR 10.5, while hitting 23 HR’s. Amazingly he only finished 10th for MVP, but did win his 4th Gold Glove.

Daisuke Matsuzaka 2008 Topps Baseball Card. That season in 29 Starts Matsuzaka was 18-3, with a 2.90 ERA and a 5.4 WAR. He led the AL in issuing 94 Walks, but gave up the least hits per 9 innings 6.9, finishing 4th for the Cy Young Award.
